20 Description

The synagogue in Mediaș was built in 1896. It combines elements of the Neo-Moorish and Neo-Romanesque styles.

The main, western façade of the synagogue faces Kogalniceanu St. and its side, southern façade faces Unirii St. The western façade is decorated by six pilasters shaped as octagonal towers with a finial at the top. The entrance door is preceded by a portico supported by four massive columns. The façade is decorated by round medallions with Stars of David; tablets of the law are placed in its center, above the central window. The southern façade is more modest; it is also decorated by round medallions with Stars of David. The eastern façade is blank, pierced only by a oculus. A pavilion with large windows is attached to that façade; the pavilion has no connection to the synagogue’s interior.

The prayer hall has a women’s gallery on its three sides and a central bimah, and it is spanned by a barrel vault.

The eastern wall of the prayer hall is painted as a blue sky with stars.

A wooden Torah ark is situated in the center. It has a form of a portal and is surmounted by the Tablets of the Law and an oculus. The gable of the ark is flanked by a painting of lions, looking towards the center. Behind each lion, a stylized palm tree, bending towards the center, is depicted. The lower part of the ark is flanked by the depictions of two large seven-branched menorot.

Two identical sets of pictures appear in the lower tier of the side walls. They start on the eastern wall with paintings of Magen David and the Crown of the Torah. The eastern pier of the northern/southern wall has a “triptych” of two seven-branched menorot and the tablets of the Law, inscribed נר מצוה ותורה אור (“For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light,” Prov. 6: 23). The central pier of the northern/southern wall has a “diptych” of two eternal lights, inscribed שמור נרי ואני אשמור נרך (Midrash Tehilim, 18). The western pier of the northern/southern wall also has a “diptych”: a goblet is inscribed כוס ישועות אשא
(“I will take the cup of salvation,” Ps. 116:13); a laver is inscribed ארחץ בנקיון כפי (“I will wash my hands in innocence,” Ps. 26:6). The last pictures of the sets on the western wall are two identical but mirrored images of the Western Wall in Jerusalem, each inscribed כותל מערבי (The Western Wall, Fig. 19). The entrance door in the center is flanked by two identical but mirrored depictions of a shofar with an olive branch, inscribed תקע בשופר גדול לחרותנו (“Sound the great shofar for our freedom,” The Amidah Prayer).

Although entirely preserved, the building is currently in a dilapidated state and demands urgent repair and restoration.

20 Description

The lower tier of the western wall of the prayer hall contains the main entrance. An arcade of five arches connects the women's section to the upper tier of the prayer hall.

The upper tier is a result of a reconstruction undertaken either in 1902 or in the 1920s (before 1929). Thus, the pilasters flanking the entrance are preserved only on the lower tier. The spaces between the arches on the upper tier are decorated with sunken rhomboids, and the piers between the arches are decorated with sunken rectangles.

The arches were bricked up after WWII when the building was transformed into a storage facility.

20 Description

The western wall consists of two tiers, divided by a horizontal cornice-like molding with a “frieze” painted with floral motifs. At the level of the molding, a metal women’s gallery is attached to the wall. It is supported by slim metal columns.

In the level of the women’s gallery, the western wall has two painted rectangles (one blue, one brown), which designates sitting places belonging to prominent families. The blue rectangle is inscribed שערעשעווסקי (Shereshevski); the brown rectangle is inscribed שרה לאה קלעבּאנסקי (Sarah Leah Klebanski).

The former entrance door is situated in the center of the wall. It’s arch is surmounted by a painted inscription, contaning the date of the building, 1642: הבו ליקוק בני אלים הבו [ליקוק כ]בוד ועוז לפק (Give to the Lord, O you mighty, give to the Lord glory and strength, Ps. 29: 1). The walls on both sides of the door are were painted with decorative brown frames. The places of alms boxes on the both sides of the door are still visible.

20 Description

Judging from the remains of the western wall, the large prayer hall might have once been spanned with a barrel vault.

Originally, the women’s section was on the upper floor, above the vestibule, in the western volume. It seems that in a later stage it was enlarged and a wooden balcony was attached to each the northern, western, and southern walls. Today (2007), only holes in the walls and some remains of beams of those balconies can be seen.

The construction of the balconies likely took place in the 1920s. Perhaps at the same time the prayer hall was painted. A photograph taken in 2000 shows remains of three large paintings on the western wall of the prayer hall. There were no traces of those paintings in 2007.

///ID/18026/

The niches of the windows on the ground floor were decorated by painted frames and rosettes. They are still discernible today (2007). The window niches on the upper tier of the eastern wall had a more elaborate decoration of painted blue curtains with golden fringe.

20 Description The Torah shield is rectangular and terminates in an arch. A plaque with the Tables of the Covenant is situated in the center of the shield. The Tables are inscribed with the first words of the Ten comandments in square outlined letters. Two rampant lions holding the Tables of the Covenant flank the plaque. They are turning backwards and extend their tongues. A crowned, spread-winged, double headed eagle is situated below the plaque. The eagle's body consists of a shield inscribed with square outlined letters which read: "כתר## מלכות" Crown of kingship" A symmetrical pillar with twisted lines and an ornamental base and capital is situated on each side of the shield. Below the pillars, on each side of the eagle, is a pattern of foliate scrolls. The Torah shield is surrounded by a raised line and serrated edges made of trefoil. There are two bird-shaped loops on the shield to which attached a chian to hang it on the Torah mantle.

20 Description

The silver Torah shield is rectangular and terminates with a wavy top. It consists of a plate.

The decoration is arranged simmetricaly on both sides of a central axis. In the center it depicts the Tables of the Covenant that bears the begining of the ten commandnents five on each side. A lion and a unicorn support the tablets from the sides. The rampant animals hold them with their front legs. Above the tablets is an elliptic openning framed by a wreath, and surmounted by an open-winged eagle. On both sides of the shield are two columns with crown-like capitals and square bases. Two snakes with griphon head twist around the columns. They lay their heads on the bases and face each other. Between the bases are musical instruments intertwined with leavs. In the center is depicted a drum flanked on right by three trumpets, and on left by a violin and a mandoline. A dedicatory inscription is inscribed on each of the colomns's base. Hardly seen it is read:

"מרישא##אשת##משה##כובאוו)?(" "Marisha the wife of Moses, Kubav(?)".

Two holes are pierced on each side of the opening at the top of the shield. Probably used to hang the chain.
