20 Description

Reconstruction of the prayer hall's western wall destroyed the most interesting part of the synagogue murals. Two additional side entrance were made and three windows of the western women's gallery were enlarged. The parts of the murals that have been preserved (though fragmented) include an inscription with the date of creation, part of the temple menorah branch with text from Psalms 37 and 67, decorative band of floral ornament, and heraldic lions in the main entrance.

20 Description

The murals adorn all the walls and the flat ceiling of the central prayer hall. The murals are made in a unit composition based on a system of architectural decoration, borders and frames, which include many paintings with different motives. All the spaces between the windows are decorated by painted pilasters. The zodiac signs are placed in the capitals of the pilasters. The images of the Holy Graves situated on the middle of the pilasters.

Painted ceilings consist of a central oval decorative plafond and a broad band of the decorative border around the perimeter of the praying hall. White eagle with a white-blue standard placed in the center of the ceiling. Four animals from Mishna Avot are situated inside of the plafond on the four sides of the world.

Image of the Temple of Messianic times, accompanied by romantic landscapes within a round medallions are placed on the west side of the prayer hall. Several landscapes and symbolic motifs also placed on the western wall.

The murals, probably were made in the twenties and then updated in the seventies - eighties of the 20th century.

20 Description

This painting depicts the Temple in Jerusalem in the form of the Dome of the Rock. The octagonal cupola structure on the Temple Mount is surrounded by numerous smaller buildings in the background. These other buildings of Jerusalem - white houses with red tile roofs and a few towers - extend to the horizon. The city of Jerusalem itself is enclosed within a fortified wall in the foreground, with the Golden Gate on the right side of the picture. A valley featuring a tree and a sandy path lies between the walled city and the viewer. The painting represents a realistic depiction of Jerusalem in that it includes both minarets and church towers.

The painting was apparently created by Mendel Grünberg in the 1920s and then completely repainted at a later date. Note that the Old Wooden Synagogue in Piatra Neamț dates from 1766 and underwent restoration in 1826, 1854, 1870, 1928, and 2010.

20 Description

The Torah ark is a frestanding, rectangular cupboard located on a raised balustrade platform approached by a three steps.

It consists of two tiers and over hanging entablature. Each tier has two doors.

The upper and main doors are flanked by apair of pillassters which are suppurted by wide bases decorated with vases and scrolls. On top of the pilastes, on both sided of the entablature. are square capitals decorated with a similar pattern.

The entablature is decorated with a curtain-like design.

The lower doors bear a dedicatory inscription which inscribed in four rows. In square filled letters it is read:

“The donation of the Gorodensig brothers for the exaltation of the soul of their father Avraham Yosef son of Eliahu of blessed Memory and their mother Mrs. Pesha daughter of Yosef, the Year (5) 674 (1914)”.

On top of the entablature are square Tables of the Covenant inscribed with the beginning words of the ten commandments. Two rampant lions which face each other support the tablets. An amphora-like finial flanks the lions, surmounting each of the capitals.

36 Summary and Remarks
Zelke (known as Simon; 1776 - 1845) who renovated the shield and re-donated it to the synagogue was born in Toschco, a town in Bohemia, under Austrian rule. As customary at the time, he was named Toschco, after his place of origin. Toschco was a wool merchant dealing with the wool industry in Bohemia and Austria. During the war against Napoleon Bonaparte (December 1805), he assisted the Austrian Royal Treasury and contributed money to fund the war. In gratitude for his act, he was honored by the Emperor and was awarded the title of nobility: Edler von Lämel (in German), and which permitted him to possess a family coat of arms, as stated in the dedicatory inscription. The title Lämel refers to his father's name, who probably was also dealing with wool. In 1856, Eliza Hertz, the daughter of the Edler von Lämel contributed money to build a school in Jerusalem, to educate Jewish orphans according to a new German innovative schooling system. She named the school Lämel, after her father's name. Ludwig August Frankal-Hochwart, was appointed, on behalf of Eliza, to supervise the curriculum and to direct the school, when time comes. Like her father, Frankal was also honoured by the Emperor, Franz the 1st and was awarded a knighthood title of Ritter von Frankal, for the publication of a patriotic book of poems: "The Poem of the Hubsburg Family." The building was designed by the German Architect Theodor Sandler. He was probably acquainted with the clock which adorns the Alt-neu synagogue in Prague, and he decorated the school façade with a similar clock, with Hebrew letters, instead of ciphers. The school was the first to teach different subjects in Hebrew and was considered by the Ashkenazi highly orthodox community in Jerusalem as a school of the Enlightenment movement. Thus, they opposed any of its activities and acted against it. However, the school gained the support of the Sephardi community in Jerusalem and till the 1880's, Ladino (Judeo Spanish) was considered its first language. During the British Mandate, the school became a public school and today it is a Talmud Torah, used by the Orthodox Jewish population.
