20 Description

Fol. 11: A rectangular panel along the lower margin of the page and extending up the outer margin depicts the hard labour of the Israelites. The composition is divided into three groups. On the right, two bearded men facing each other are preparing the mortar, shown as a white heap between them. The man on the left is preparing blocks of mortar, one lying in a bowl at his feet. At the centre of the panel, a young man is building a brick wall, while behind him an Egyptian taskmaster holding a club is supervising the work. On the left a group of three men are engaged in building a tower: a young man is carrying bricks on his shoulder; another, with a pail of mortar, is climbing a ladder leaning against a tower, at the top of which stands the builder. He is holding a trowel in his right hand and adjusting the bricks with his left. The panel is framed by a black ink line, with an acanthus stem issuing from the top, and another descends into the panel near the figure on the right.

Fig. 5: Avadim hayinu

Bird's Head Haggadah

Franconia, c.1300

Jerusalem, IM MS 180/57, fol. 15

(Spitzer, facsimile 1967)

The illustration to "We were bondmen" (עבדים היינו) is found in most Ashkenazi and Italo-Ashkenazi haggadot. It usually depicts the erection of the two cities, Pithom and Raamses, mentioned in the text of the haggadah (figs. 2, 5 the cities identified, and 4). In other cases, such as theBarcelonaand Tegernsee Haggadot (figs. 1, 3), the Israelites are building a tower, which might be either city. The iconography of this scene frequently includes Israelites mixing mortar, climbing a ladder and placing the bricks at the top of the tower or wall. An early version appears in the Bird's Head Haggadah of c.1300 fromFranconia(fig. 5). An interesting detail in our haggadah, which also appears in others, is the figure of an Egyptian taskmaster, who is taller than the others and holds a club or whip (figs. 1-4). This detail may derive from the full story of the labour inEgypt(Ex. 5:13).

20 Description

The Great Synagogue (Hoykhe Shul) was built in 1834 [see: A. Streja and L. Schwarz, The Synagogue in Romania, 2nd. ed. (Bucharest: Hasefer, 2009), p. 142]. The synagogue consists of an elongated building decorated with pilasters. Twelve windows, set at the level of the (partial) upper floor, serve to illuminate the rectangular main prayer hall. The women's section has a separate entrance and is located on the upper floor of the prayer hall on the west side. The lower (main) floor of the prayer hall is sunken below ground level. The synagogue (now called Sinagoga Mare) is surrounded by modern buildings at 1 Strada Marchian (18 Muzicanti).

The Great Synagogue in Botoșani includes three spaces containing wall and ceiling paintings: the main prayer hall, the women's gallery, and the heated small prayer hall.

20 Description

The Great Synagogue was built in 1879 (Streja & Schwarz, p. 90). It is a temple in Neo-Romanesque style, with two tower flanking the western facade.

The square prayer hall is lit by two tiers of windows. The Torah ark is placed in the center of the eastern wall, he women's section is situated at the western gallery.

The ceiling of the prayer hall shows a circle, through wich blue sky with stars is seen. The vaults connecting the ceiling with the walls are decorated by depictions of galands. The eastern vault bears also a depiction of Mount Sinai with the Decalogue on its top. The northeastern and southeastern corners of the vaults are decorated by depictions of musical instruments.

The border of the ceiling is decorated by a depiction of garland, in which small landscapes of the Land of Israel are inserted.

A painting of a lion appears above the entrance to the prayer hall. It is signed צבי מאהלער, Tzvi Mahler (Mahler is painter in Yiddish and German). Most probably this painting was made in the 1930s or 1950s.
