20 Description

The Great Synagogue in Stolin was built in 1790 - 1793 with the support of the owner of the town, Kashtan Kozenewski. In 1827, the building was severely damaged by fire and was later restored. After WWII, the building accommodated grain storage and it was later abandoned in the 1980s. Currently, it stands as a ruin without roof; only the walls of the synagogue are still intact.

The synagogue was built in the Neo-Classicist style that was fashionable in the late 18th century. Its exterior was decorated by pilasters, and its western and eastern façades were topped by gables. The eastern wall of the synagogue is not straight; its central part projects a little to the east so that the corners look truncated.

20 Description

The western wall consists of two tiers, divided by a horizontal cornice-like molding with a “frieze” painted with floral motifs. At the level of the molding, a metal women’s gallery is attached to the wall. It is supported by slim metal columns.

In the level of the women’s gallery, the western wall has two painted rectangles (one blue, one brown), which designates sitting places belonging to prominent families. The blue rectangle is inscribed שערעשעווסקי (Shereshevski); the brown rectangle is inscribed שרה לאה קלעבּאנסקי (Sarah Leah Klebanski).

The former entrance door is situated in the center of the wall. It’s arch is surmounted by a painted inscription, contaning the date of the building, 1642: הבו ליקוק בני אלים הבו [ליקוק כ]בוד ועוז לפק (Give to the Lord, O you mighty, give to the Lord glory and strength, Ps. 29: 1). The walls on both sides of the door are were painted with decorative brown frames. The places of alms boxes on the both sides of the door are still visible.

20 Description

The synagogue in Sighişoara, built in 1911, is a modest Neo-Romanesque building, facing the street with its main, northwestern facade.

The prayer hall is spenned with a barrel vault, painted as a starry sky. The hall is lit by eight windows: two in the southeastern wall, flankung the Torah ark, and three in each southwestern and northeastern walls, which are partially blocked by wooden women's galleries. An oculus is placed above the Torah ark. A wooden square bimah is situated in the center of the hall.

The Torah ark is a wooden structure decorated by Stars of David and topped by the tablets of the law. It is flanked by two painted palm trees. The tree on the right side is inscribed צדיק כתמר אפרח ("The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree," Ps. 92:12), and the tree on the left inscribed with the continuation of the verse: כארז בלבנון ישגה ("he shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon," Ps. 92:12).

A depiction of the Western Wall in Jerusalem is situated to the right from the entrance door at the northwestern wall of the hall. It looks like a painting is richly decorated frame hanging on the wall. The Western Wall plaza is shown as a narrow lane with a single tree.

20 Description

The synagogue in Mediaș was built in 1896. It combines elements of the Neo-Moorish and Neo-Romanesque styles.

The main, western façade of the synagogue faces Kogalniceanu St. and its side, southern façade faces Unirii St. The western façade is decorated by six pilasters shaped as octagonal towers with a finial at the top. The entrance door is preceded by a portico supported by four massive columns. The façade is decorated by round medallions with Stars of David; tablets of the law are placed in its center, above the central window. The southern façade is more modest; it is also decorated by round medallions with Stars of David. The eastern façade is blank, pierced only by a oculus. A pavilion with large windows is attached to that façade; the pavilion has no connection to the synagogue’s interior.
