20 Description

Col. 19: In the upper margin, a bust of a young crowned man is depicted. In the lower margin, on the right, a feast is shown; it can be the first Purim feast (Es. 9:17-23). In the text column above, an additional scene of hanging of Haman’s ten sons (Es. 9:14) is incorporated. It is designed in the same way as in the Amsterdam prototype (see "Esther scrolls with portrait medallions") - on every beam of a very high gallows, a single body is hanged. A high ladder leans on it and on its top an executioner is sitting (he is only partly visible).

Col. 20: In the upper margin, a bust of a young woman is depicted. In the lower margin, a big building is depicted that can be the king’s palace.

20 Description

Col. 15: In the upper margin, a bust of a young person is depicted. In the lower margin, on the right, there is a gallows with two bodies suspending from it; they are the king’s chamberlains, Bigthan and Teresh (Es. 2:23). On the left, the king is seated on the throne and a person (Esther?) is kneeling at his feet; it can be a moment when Esther informs the king about the plot of Bigthan and Teresh (Es. 2:22).

Col. 16: In the upper margin, a bust of a young person is depicted. In the lower margin, an unidentified scene is represented. On the right, the king sits on the throne and another person stands next to him. On the left, there are two men standing; one of them holds a piece of rope (?) which is tied around a neck of yet another man who is prostrated on the ground.

Col. 17: In the upper margin, a bust of a man is depicted. In the lower margin, on the right, Ahasuerus sits on the throne under a canopy and the crowned Esther kneels before him and asks the king to hang the ten sons of Haman on the gallows. On the left, Haman's ten sons are hanging on two beams of the same gallows (Es. 9:14).

Col. 18: In the upper margin, a bust of a young man is depicted. In the lower margin, on the right, a table with three scribes seated at it is shown. They write one of the decrees; it can be a decree allowing the Jews to defend themselves (Es. 8:9). On the left, the king's messengers are going to deliver the decree (Es. 8:14).

Col. 19: In the upper margin, a bust of a young crowned man is depicted. In the lower margin, on the right, a feast is shown; it can be the first Purim feast (Es. 9:17-23). Col. 11: In the upper margin, a bust of a man is depicted; he can be one of the servants (Hatach?, Harbonah?). In the lower margin, crowned Mordecai rides on horseback and the horse is led by a man. In the background a walled city is visible. The scene is depicted for the second time in the scroll (see description of the opening panel).

Col. 12: In the upper margin, a bust of a young crowned woman is depicted; she can be Queen Esther. In the lower margin, a wedding ceremony of Ahasuerus and Esther is represented. The Bible does not mention this event and the source for this representation remains unknown. The same motif, although represented in a slightly different way, can be found in the Esther scrolls with landscapes, scrolls with portrait medallions and their copies made by hand, as well as in the scrolls designed by Marcus Donath (Mordecai ben Jozl Sofer) of Nitra (see their descriptions in the Index).

Col. 13: In the upper margin, a bust of a young crowned woman is depicted (partly preserved); she can be Queen Esther. In the lower margin, on the right, there is the king seated at the throne and a man stands before him. The scene is difficult for an unambiguous interpretation. It can be a conversation between Ahasuerus and Haman or Mordecai before the king as it is said in verses 8:1 or 8:15.

Col. 14: In the upper margin, a bust of a crowned man is depicted; he can be one of the princes of Media and Persia listed in Es. 1:14. In the lower margin, several buildings are shown. It can be a city of Susa (?).

20 Description

Frame 5: In the upper margin, a bust of a crowned man is depicted; he can be one of the princes of Media and Persia listed in Es. 1:14. In the lower margin, three figures are shown - the king, a man (Mordecai?) who stands in front of him, and Esther who is kneeling. The scene is difficult for an unambiguous interpretation. It can be the moment when Haman's property is given to Esther and Mordecai (Es. 8:1), the moment when Esther pleads the king to annul the decree (Es. 8:3), or the moment when the king speaks with Esther and Mordecai (Es. 8:7-8).

Frame 6: In the upper margin, a bust of a crowned man is depicted; he can be one of the princes of Media and Persia listed in Es. 1:14. In the lower margin, on the right and in the center, Haman talks to his wife, Zeresh, and/or his friends (Es. 5:14). On the left, the gallows Haman prepared for Mordecai is shown (Es. 5:14).

Frame 7:  In the upper margin, a bust of a crowned man is depicted; he can be one of the princes of Media and Persia listed in Es. 1:14. In the lower margin, the royal couple accompanied by courtiers; it is difficult to determine if any particular event is represented here.

Frame 8: In the upper margin, a bust of a young woman is depicted. In the lower margin, on the right and in the center, Esther's second banquet with the king and Haman is depicted (Es. 7:1). On the left, Ahasuerus returns from the palace gardens while Haman is begging Esther for mercy (Es. 7:8).

Frame 9: In the upper margin, a bust of a crowned man is depicted; he can be one of the princes of Media and Persia listed in Es. 1:14. In the lower margin, Queen Vashti is portrayed while she is strangled by two women standing on either side of her. During the execution, she kneels with her hands crossed on the chest and the crown lies on the floor. The Book of Esther does not mention the fate of Vashti after her refusal of the king's order and the source for this representation remains unknown. The same theme, although illustrated in a slightly different way, can be found in the Esther scrolls "with portrait medallions" and "with landscapes" and in the scrolls designed by Marcus Donath (Mordecai ben Jozl Sofer) of Nitra (see their descriptions in the Index).

20 Description

Opening panel: The panel contains all three benedictions recited before the reading of Megillah; they start from the enlarged letter ב. In the upper margin, the royal couple and several servants are depicted. In the lower margin, crowned Mordecai rides on horseback, and the horse is led by a man - Haman. In the background a walled city is visible. The scene is depicted twice in the scroll (see description of col. 11).

Col. 1: In the upper margin, a bust of the king is depicted. In the lower margin, possibly, the king's feast is enclosed. At the table, seven men are seated, and they are accompanied by two men (servants?) who are standing on either side of the table.

Col. 2: In the upper margin, a bust of one of the queens is depicted; it is just above the second text column, so it can be assumed that she is Queen Vashti. In the lower margin, possibly, the feast of Queen Vashti is shown. In the image, there is a table with seven people seated at it; above a central figure, a canopy is marked.

Col. 3: In the upper margin, a bust of a bearded man is depicted; he can be Mordecai. In the lower margin, several women are lead by a man (most likely Hegai) to the buildings depicted on the right.

Col. 4: In the upper margin, a bust of a young woman is depicted; she can be Esther before she became a queen. In the lower margin, an unidentified scene is represented. On the left, the king sits on a throne and a man gives him a cup; there is a gate on the right. It could be an allusion to the Midrashic tale saying about poisoned wine that the chamberlains, Bightan and Teresh, planned to give to the king.

20 Description

The lavishly decorated scroll executed in a pen and sepia ink, illustrated with thirty-eight illustrations that chronicle the Esther story narrative or depict episodes based on the Targum Sheni on the Book of Esther. The manuscript opens with a triumphal arch topped with a crown supported by two putti; its inner part is filled with the benedictions and liturgical poems. The text of the Book of Esther is inscribed in the square text panels that are surrounded by the narrative scenes and ornaments composed of acanthus leaves. Additionally, every first panel of each membrane is decorated with a pair of putti supporting a crown and a banderole with Hebrew inscription.

The scroll is mounted on a wooden turned roller.
