20 Description

The page is decorated with a large wreath occupying 2/3 of the page. It consists of leaves arranged in the pairs and turned upwards. Two open flowers decorate the wreath on the top and bottom and two wavy strips emerge from the lower flower. Within the wreath there is a grid, which is probably executed later than the wreath.

Under the wreath a motif of laying 8, done by several lines and an ellipse in its center, decorate the bottom of the page.

Additions by brighter ink, as a palmetto motif on the top of the upper flower, filling of the leaves by short strokes and an inscription within the wreath on the right are later.

Fol. 63v:

The diagram consists of a circle within a bigger circle. Two horizontal parallel lines divide the circles into two halves. An additional small circle is situated in the geometrical center of both circles, between two horizontal lines. In the upper half there is an inscription "Heaven" (שמים) in Ashkenazi square script, whereas in the lower part is "Earth" (ארץ). On the crossing of the circles' borders and the horizontal lines there are other inscriptions: יה from the right and אה from

the left, which mean the names of God. Around the biggest circle there are two outer inscriptions related to the text. First one on the right is: "The heaves is all his honour, above and beneath" (השמים הכל כבודו למעלה ולמטה). The second on the left is: "And beneath are the arms of the world" (ומתחת זרועות עולם).

20 Description

Fol. 1:

The title page is decorated in the upper part with a double-headed eagle formed by spiral lines. The eagle's right head faces to the right, whereas the left head is folded at the neck and faces downwards. Its wings are spread out and in the centre on its breast is an oval with an inscription written within it, following the spiral shape:

"שמים לרום\ וארץ לעומק\ ולבב מלכים אין חקר (משלי כה: ג) למו' (?)\ לפ"ק [לפרט קטן]"

"'The heaven for height, and the earth for depth, and the heart of kings is unsearchable' (Proverbs 25: 3) (?)\ excluding the thousands."[1]

The summary of the numerical values of the letters""ולבב... למו' which are part of the inscription gives the date of year 1865, which is the year the manuscript was composed.

The eagle is perched on a horizontal bar, over which a curtain is draped. A dedicatory inscription in German is written on the curtain:

"Great Emperor's Highness

RUDOLF FRANZ KARL JOSEF

Crown Prince and Heir to the throne, Archduke of

Austriaand so on,

In duty bound and loved by his people

And it is duty to speak on the birthday

Of His Highness on 21 August 1865."

"Gr. [Gross] Kaiserlich Hoheit

RUDOLF FRANZ KARL JOSEF

Kronprinz und Thronfolger, Erzherzog von

Oestreich et ct [etcetera],

In Pflichtschuldigste Unterthansliebe und

Treue ausgesprochen zur Geburtsfeuer

Sr, Hoheit am 21. August 1865."

Under the curtain it is written: "Ehrfurchtsvoll gewidmet von Israel Moses Sobel./ aus Przemysl" ("Respectfully dedicated by Israel Moses Sobel./ from Przemysl").

In the lower part of the page below the curtain it is inscribed in Hebrew:

"יום: נקדמה פניו בתודה לסדר: הנני נתן לו את בריתי שלום; ולפרט: והיתה\ הטובה הזו לו ולזרעו אחריו. – לפ"ק"

Day: we will precede his face with thanksgiving to the order: I give him my covenant of peace; and particularly: and this favour was [granted] to him and to his progeny after him (1869)"

Above and below the eagle are other inscriptions, all giving the year the manuscript was composed in numerical values of the letters:

"בשם יי' אלהים אל עולם, לפ"ק א והנותן כח ועז, לפ"ק אדר הממשלה, לפ"ק ובכבוד להנשר, לפ"ק הרב בין ארזי לבנון, לפ"ק"

"In the name of God, Lord of the world (1865) (?) who gives strength and courage (1869) splendor (?) of the government (1865) and with honour to the eagle (1865) Rabbi (?) among cedars of Lebanon[2] (1865)"

"כל זרוזה ושורה למנין שנת הכתר מנויה וספורה"

"Every quick (?) and row in the count of the year KETER (Crown = 1865) is counted and calculated"

"הן כנשר, לפ"ק בארך האבר בגדל הכנף, לפ"ק"

"As the eagle (1865) in the length of the wing in the size of the wing (1865)"

"הנה גם הוא בזה על גוזליו הלא ירחף, לפ"ק"

"Here he also in this, above his young birds will not float (1865)"

At the bottom corners of the page there are two signatures of Israel Moses Sobel: the right one is in Hebrew and the left one is in German (see: General Document).

[1] Notation after the enumeration of the Jewish year represented by Hebrew letters, indicating that the thousands of years are excluded from the date.

[2] The "cedars of Lebanon" are mentioned numerous times in the Bible, heralded as impressive trees and likened to monarchs (Kings 2, 14: 9).
