The synagogue is a simple freestanding building of irregular shape situated among dwelling houses.  It consists of two volumes – a two-storey main volume which contains the prayer hall and a single storey northern volume with auxiliary premises. The main volume is a two-storey high trapezoid structure covered by a hipped roof.  It contains the main prayer hall with a women's gallery on the west and north, a small prayer room in the north and a staircase to the women's gallery.  The south facade of the volume faces the street; its west facade faces the courtyard, which is separated from the street by a grillwork fence. The northern volume is a trapezoid single storey structure, connected to the north facade of the main volume.  It consists of four rooms: two communal offices, a kitchen and a bathroom, and it is covered by a lean-to roof.  It has two windows and two doors leading to the courtyard. Description of the exterior: The south or main facade is facing the street.  It is framed by two pilaster-strips and divided into two sunken fields by a central pilaster-strip.  They are topped by a wide blank freeze and a moulded cornice.  An onion shaped dome on a low octagonal drum protrudes over the roof, above the central pilaster-strip.  Each facet of the drum is pierced by a small bull's eye window. Two globular finials on cubic bases are mounted over the lateral pilasters.  Each finial and the dome terminate with a Star of David apex. Each field of the facade has an arch enclosing a triple window with round arches and colonettes.  The lunette of each arch is decorated by a pair of double-stepped depressed circles, and the arch is decorated with five protruding voussoirs.  The windows are set back in moulded frames.  The spandrels of these frames are covered by concrete plaster in the "fur coat" technique.  The panels under the protruding window sills as well as the lower part of the pilasters are currently covered by white ceramic tiles with a diamond-shaped pattern made from blue tiles. The western facade is comprised of two tiers and framed by two pilaster-strips. Another one divides it into two unequal sections, corresponding to the main synagogue in the southern part and the small prayer room in the north. The lower tier of the southern part is preceded by a gabled entrance hall flanked by two rectangular windows. The entrance hall’s western wall has a wide rectangular window topped by two round ones.  A door leads into the entrance hall from the south, whereas its northern wall is blind. On the upper tier of the southern part are three rectangular windows corresponding to the women’s gallery, which extends in the interior on the north and west walls. In the northern part there is a door which leads to the small prayer room.  A window above it gives light to the women's gallery. The northern facade is three tiers high.  There are two windows on the first tier, corresponding to the small prayer room.  A side entrance covered with a lean-to roof leading to the women's section is located in the eastern corner.  In the second tier there are three windows, corresponding to the women’s gallery, and on the third tier there is a small window on the eastern corner corresponds to the attic.  All the openings are rectangular. The east wall of the main volume is a blank firewall.

20 Description

The composition of the ceiling is determined by twelve angled frames, resulting from the intersection of four centrally symmetrical equilateral triangles.  The central medallion is decorated with flowers, the corner ones contain the images of a lion, an eagle, a leopard, and a deer. The twelve angled frames feature the zodiac signs and inside the composition are twelve landscapes and still-lives, framed by cartouches with quotations from Psalm 150.

The signs of the Zodiac, each inscribed with its name and month, are depicted inside the triangles of a large twelve-pointed star in the centre of the ceiling.  The star is made of four intertwined triangles, within a circle, and the signs are depicted in the order of the months.  The starting point is the sign of Scales (the first month -Tishrei), situated in the east triangle, which is connected to the Torah ark by a crown.  The signs continue in a counter-clockwise direction.

In the central field of the star, there is a circle of 12 cartouches with images illustrating Psalm 150.  The scenes are consecutive and follow the text, reading counter-clockwise from the southwest corner, so that the depiction of the Shofar illustrating the fifth verse corresponds to month of Tishrei.

The illustrated cartouches alternate with 12 decorative ones.  A round rosette with flowers is painted in the centre of the composition.

The four animals from Pirkeh Avot 5:20 are depicted in medallions in the corners of the ceiling: a tiger in southwest corner, an eagle in the northwest one, a deer in the northeast, and a lion in the southeast.

20 Description

The eastern wall consists of two tiers, divided by a horizontal cornice-like molding with a “frieze” painted with floral motifs.

According to a pre-WWII photograph, the lower tier of the wall was painted with colonnades and open Torah arks with Torah scrolls (see photo in Yad Vashem Photos Archive).

The Torah ark is situated in the center of the eastern wall. The niche for the Torah cabinet is flanked by two Renaissance pilasters narrowing towards the bottom. Each pilaster is decorated by a painted flower. The entablature of the pilasters is painted with rosettes and acanthus leaves.

The upper part of the ark, above the cornice, is a kind of stylized Baroque gable, topped by a vase. In its center, two lions support the Tablets of the Law, which is placed inside a wreath and surmounted by a crown.

An oculus is situated above the ark in the central lunette. A bird sitting on a branch is painted on its upper side. The hands in the gesture of a priestly blessing are painted on the lunette above the oculus. Above the hands is an inscription: "יברכך" (He will bless you). The inscription is surmounted by a crown with Magen David. The southern side of the lunette features a depiction of an etrog in a container and the northern side has a depiction of lulav, hadas, and aravah.

The upper part of the ark is flanked by two pilasters. Each pilaster is surmounted by a painting of a vase of flowers. The northern pilaster has a depiction of a destroyed building near two cypress trees. This most likely represents the destroyed Jerusalem Temple. The southern pilaster has a painting of two stone walls with round-headed arches and two high trees are seen behind the wall. This painting likely represents the Western Wall of the Jerusalem Temple.

Each pilaster is decorated with a painting of a colonnade with Corinthian columns. The entablature of the colonnades continues on the pilasters. On their outer edges, the colonnades are topped with painted figures of lions in a prone position. Between the columns, the musical instruments used in the Temple are depicted.

20 Description

The Torah ark is situated in the center of the eastern wall. The niche for the Torah cabinet is flanked by two Renaissance pilasters narrowing towards the bottom. Each pilaster is decorated by a painted flower. The entablature of the pilasters is painted with rosettes and acanthus leaves.

The upper part of the ark, above the cornice, is a kind of stylized Baroque gable, topped by a vase. In its center, two lions support the Tablets of the Law, which is placed inside a wreath and surmounted by a crown.
