20 Description

The murals adorn all the walls and the flat ceiling of the central prayer hall. The murals are made in a unit composition based on a system of architectural decoration, borders and frames, which include many paintings with different motives. All the spaces between the windows are decorated by painted pilasters. The zodiac signs are placed in the capitals of the pilasters. The images of the Holy Graves situated on the middle of the pilasters.

Painted ceilings consist of a central oval decorative plafond and a broad band of the decorative border around the perimeter of the praying hall. White eagle with a white-blue standard placed in the center of the ceiling. Four animals from Mishna Avot are situated inside of the plafond on the four sides of the world.

Image of the Temple of Messianic times, accompanied by romantic landscapes within a round medallions are placed on the west side of the prayer hall. Several landscapes and symbolic motifs also placed on the western wall.

The murals, probably were made in the twenties and then updated in the seventies - eighties of the 20th century.

20 Description

The barrel vault of the main prayer hall features a large painted plafond. The central space of this plafond depicts a blue sky, flying swallows, and an eagle holding a Torah scroll in its beak while resting atop a blue sphere. The eagle is situated in the eastern part of the vault above the Torah ark. The large border of the plafond (around the perimeter of the central sky space) depicts a decorative half-wall and balustrade, the piers of which are surmounted by vases. The panels represented as forming part of the wall underneath the balustrade depict Christian and Muslim cities and natural landscapes.

20 Description

The south facet of the lattice structure at the west end of the main prayer hall holds four panels depicting scenes in the Land of Israel. These four panels depict (from right to left):

1. The scene described in Psalm 137, with musical instruments (violin, horn, and drum) hanging from trees that stand alongside a river bank. Sailboats float in the river in the background. The inscription extends the sense of this reference to Psalm 137 by referring directly to the memory of the destroyed Temple in Jerusalem.

Inscription:

זכר לחורבן

Translation:

In memory of the Destruction [of the Temple]

2. Rachel's Tomb in the shape of a cubic structure topped by a red dome. The image includes roads leading to the monument from all sides.

Inscription:

רחל מבכה על בניה

Translation:

Rachel is weeping over her children (Jeremiah 31:14/15)

3. The Dead Sea with white waves, a desert clay beach, and seagulls.

Inscription:

ים המלח

Translation:

The Salt Sea [i.e., the Dead Sea]

4. The City of Zion (Jerusalem) as a castle with fortifications.

Inscription:

ציון במר תבכה

Translation:

Zion weeps bitterly

[This is an excerpt from the Nachem prayer that is recited during the Mincha service on Tisha b'Av. The prayer requests consolation for the mourners of Zion and regarding the destruction of Jerusalem]

20 Description

The kloyz was apparently built after the establishment of the court of Rabbi Itzhak Friedmann (1834-1896), a grandson of Rabbi Israel of Ruzhin, in Buhuşi (Bohosh) in 1866 (Streja A., and Schwarz L., The Synagogue in Romania, The Hasefer Publishing House, 2009, p. 81б give a wrong date, 1840). The kloyz was built in the Neo-Baroque style as a small palace with the main entrance and the stairs from the courtyard. Four large semi-circular window decorated with architraves and keystones are located on each of the three facades of the building (except the western one). The building is decorated by rusticated decor, pilasters, and multilevel cornice. A semicircular niche flanked by pilasters marks the place of the Torah ark.

The building was renovated in the 1980s, its prayer hall was completely repainted.
