20 Description

At the center of the ceiling composition is a large bouquet of roses, daisies and field flowers set against the backdrop of the blue sky and flying swallows.  The bouquet is circled with a wreath featuring twelve medallions with images of musical instruments and spectacular nature scenes, which illustrated Psalm 150. The entire composition is inscribed within the dodecagon (twelve – pointed star), which consists of two hexagrams (possibly two stars of David) of contrasting colors.

20 Description

A panted plaque contains the names of those who donated to the building of the synagogue in 1919. The days of passing away were added to the names in the left column later. The passing away of one of the donors, Itzhak Reines, is inscribed as 1942 and added in paretheses "in a camp." Those inscriptions were made in 1945-1951, when the synagogue was officially active (Altshuler, p. 454).

The last row of the plaque reads:

המשתדל בציור [.....] פישמאן

Caring for the paintings [....] Fishman

It may be supposed that Fishman is the name of the artist, who decorated the synagogue, or most probably the name of the donor, who paid for the paintings.

20 Description

At the center of the ceiling composition is a large bouquet of roses, daisies and field flowers set against the backdrop of the blue sky and flying swallows.  The bouquet is circled with a wreath featuring twelve medallions with images of musical instruments and spectacular nature scenes. The entire composition is inscribed within the dodecagon (twelve – pointed star), which consists of two hexagrams (possibly two stars of David) of contrasting colors. Each and every element of the geometrical figure is artistically conceptualized. The sharp angles of the big star contain signs of the Zodiac and rhombus formed through the intersection of the hexagons. The corners of the star feature round medallions with heraldic eagles playing the shofar. The composition is supplemented by ornamental borders with images of the lulavand etrog and four animals – a lion, eagle, panther and deer – all inside the medallions.

Building: rectangular building 18 x 22 m

History

The synagogue murals in Novoselitsya discovered in 2008 . The table with the names of donors suggests that the synagogue was built in 1919. Archival documents confirm that the synagogue opened in 1920, when Novoselitsya was part of Romania’s Bessarabia province (Central Archive for the History of Jewish People, Jerusalem, RU 1761).The frescos were probably made around the same time, since the list of donors also features the name Fishman who had provided funds for the interior decorations.

AftertheSecondWorldWar,the building was not used as a synagogue. The frescos survived in their pristine form under a layer of plaster. Aside from some minor losses resulting from the re-construction of the building, the composition was preserved almost entirely. The frescos offer a unique subject for research, given that they were conceived and completed by the master himself.

The master’s name was GroyzgroufromthetownKhotyn.
