The painting depicts the interior of the tabernacle with its implements: the Ark of the Covenant, the Altar, the Sevenbranched menorah, the Table of shewbread and a variety of vessels from gold and porcelain. The Ark of the Covenant and the Altar are depicted as portable marble pedestals. Two golden Cherubs are depicted on the Ark of the Covenant. The twelve shewbreads are depicted in the form of round cakes. The camp of the Tribes of Israel is visible in the open doorway of the tabernacle.

The artist used as a model an etching from the printing book Icones Biblicae (1625-1630) of Matthaeus Merian (the Elder).

20 Description

The balconies of the women's section include fourteen murals depicting landscape scenes. The artist painted each of these landscapes within an oval border or "frame". All of the landscapes were executed in a popular folk style. They include depictions of: rural scenes with houses, trees, ponds, lakes, paths, and castles; animals including deer, swans, oxen, and even elephants; and different times of day (including sunrise and sunset) and of year (seasons). These compositions were repainted during restoration undertaken in the 1970s, and therefore it is impossible to say how they looked originally.

The decoration on the ceiling vault of the synagogue represents a multi-level composition. The central area is decorated with a large eagle against the background of a sky containing golden stars. The eagle has black breasts and enormous white wings. It clutches a red military standard bearing an inscription. This central composition (eagle and sky) is bordered by a multi-tiered frame composed of geometric designs, floral decorations, and a row of red curtains. The center of each side of the frame contains one of the four animals of Pirkei Avot 5:20 (tiger, eagle, deer, and lion).

20 Description

The eastern wall of the prayer hall presents a complicated architectural decoration. A wall painting depicts tall columns supporting elaborate neo-Gothic pendentives. The Torah ark is situated in the center of the eastern wall and represents a high, three-tiered construction against the backdrop of a luxurious red curtain. The Torah ark is fashioned in the shape of a portal. It is carved, painted, and gilded, with decorations depicting lions, birds, trumpeting gryphons, the stone Tablets of the Law, and hands portraying the high priestly blessing. The upper tier of the Torah ark contains two oval paintings of Egyptian pyramids and ruins. Above the Torah ark stands a large gilded double-headed eagle with a single crown placed on its heads.

Inscriptions:

Above the two oval paintings in the upper tier of the Torah ark, within a round medallion containing a Magen David:

כת [=כתר תורה]

Translation: Crown of the Torah

Above the Torah ark:

מכינו [אבינו] מלכנו פתח שערי שמים לתפלתינו

Translation: Our father, our king, open the gates of heaven to our prayers!

20 Description

The Leipziger Temple in Piatra-Neamţ was originally built by David and Pinchas Kolomier in 1839 and renovated in 1904 after a fire. The rebuilt synagogue features a high curved roof and two bands of windows. The windows in the upper tier are circular, while those in the lower tier are semicircular (forming the top section of an arch). Atypically the eastern wall, which contains the niche for the Torah ark inside the main prayer hall, is a long wall; the prayer hall is thus wide instead of long. The exterior of the eastern wall (at the place corresponding to the niche for the Torah ark) features a rectangular apse decorated with pilasters, a blind arch, and an inscription with the name of the synagogue.
