20 Description

The painting depicts a massive five-domed building inside the city wall. The structure resembles a massive Romanesque church built of red brick. Flat dome are covered with tiles, and the drums are cute by semicircular Romanesque windows.  Master, perhaps, took a model from the local surrounding architecture. The valley with sandy paths and trees separates the City from the viewer. The painting are framed with painted sumptuous theatrical curtain.

Inscription:

אם אשכחך ירושלים תשכח ימיני (תהלים    קלז  ה)

If I forget you, Jerusalem, may my right hand forget its skill (Psalm 137:5)

20 Description

The Synagogue in Râmnicu Sărat was reportedly built in 1855. [See: A. Streja and L. Schwarz, The Synagogue in Romania, 2nd. ed. (Bucharest: Hasefer, 2009), pp. 106, 273.]

Sixteen lancet windows – six on the north side, six on the south side, and four on the east side – give light to the prayer hall. A second tier of small round windows lights the women's gallery. The windows are decorated on the building exterior with intervening pilasters and curved blind arches. A semicircular apse on the east side of the building marks the niche of the Torah ark.

The vestibule of the synagogue serves as a small prayer room and leads to the main prayer hall. The women's gallery occupies an upper tier (balcony) that compasses the main prayer hall on three sides.

20 Description

The main prayer hall of the Synagogue in Râmnicu Sărat contains an ornate Torah ark and decorative plafond. The prayer hall is compassed on three sides by an upper tier (balcony) comprising the women's gallery. The vestibule (small prayer hall) serves as the entryway into the main prayer hall.

The Torah ark was constructed, probably in the late 19th century, in the shape of a large closet. It has been partially preserved (some damage is evident). The Torah ark includes decorative images made of carved and gilded wood. It stands against a painted background (mural) depicting a purple curtain. The upper tier of the Torah ark extends nearly to the ceiling. It is topped by a double-headed eagle wearing a crown.

The painted plafond on the flat ceiling of the main prayer hall dates from the early 1920s and has been preserved almost completely. A large central oval dominates the plafond composition. It depicts a sky dotted with golden stars and encircled by a balustrade. A large eagle holding an open Torah scroll in its claws is depicted at the eastern end of the central oval. Four scenes of holy places in the Land of Israel appear at the four sides of the plafond, each framed within a round medallion.

20 Description

The murals adorn all the walls and the flat ceiling of the central prayer hall. The murals are made in a unit composition based on a system of architectural decoration, borders and frames, which include many paintings with different motives. All the spaces between the windows are decorated by painted pilasters. The zodiac signs are placed in the capitals of the pilasters. The images of the Holy Graves situated on the middle of the pilasters.

Painted ceilings consist of a central oval decorative plafond and a broad band of the decorative border around the perimeter of the praying hall. White eagle with a white-blue standard placed in the center of the ceiling. Four animals from Mishna Avot are situated inside of the plafond on the four sides of the world.

Image of the Temple of Messianic times, accompanied by romantic landscapes within a round medallions are placed on the west side of the prayer hall. Several landscapes and symbolic motifs also placed on the western wall.

The murals, probably were made in the twenties and then updated in the seventies - eighties of the 20th century.

20 Description

The kloyz was apparently built after the establishment of the court of Rabbi Itzhak Friedmann (1834-1896), a grandson of Rabbi Israel of Ruzhin, in Buhuşi (Bohosh) in 1866 (Streja A., and Schwarz L., The Synagogue in Romania, The Hasefer Publishing House, 2009, p. 81б give a wrong date, 1840). The kloyz was built in the Neo-Baroque style as a small palace with the main entrance and the stairs from the courtyard. Four large semi-circular window decorated with architraves and keystones are located on each of the three facades of the building (except the western one). The building is decorated by rusticated decor, pilasters, and multilevel cornice. A semicircular niche flanked by pilasters marks the place of the Torah ark.

The building was renovated in the 1980s, its prayer hall was completely repainted.

20 Description

A lattice structure separates the synagogue vestibule from the main prayer hall (at the west end of the latter). The top part of this partition is decorated with panels depicting scenes in the Land of Israel (cities and holy places). The east-facing facet of the lattice structure holds eight panels, while its south-facing facet holds four panels. Of these 12 total panels, five depict new cities founded and built in the Land of Israel in the late 19th and early 20th century. Since the included city of Bnei Brak was founded in 1924, the paintings were probably made ca. 1920-1930.
