20 Description

The reader's desk stands opposite the ark, in the centre of the synagogue. It is rectangular furniture formed of a    chest topped by an elevated back.

The top of the rectangular cupboard serves as a table, enclosed on its two sides within a banister. The banister is made-up of two front flat columns, which terminates with geometrical finials and connected to a back frame by two diagonal handrails.

The back is an elevated rectangular frame enclosing an ogee arch, reaching to the wooden ceiling. It is divided by a horizontal bar into two parts; the lower is subdivided in its centre into two square panels, on which prayers are hung. The lower wooden bar is decorated with a floral pattern and topped by triangles. While the upper bar is adorned by a pair of graded wooden hooks facing the ark and additional toothed triangles with hooks on its front.

The desk is painted brown.

Two metal blue boxes are placed on the back of the teivah, and are used for memorial candles.

20 Description

The synagogue complex forms a closed rectangular unit comprising a prayer hall built between two inner courtyards set in a general north-south axis and surrounded by a wall.

Exterior

The complex borders two different alleys on its north-east and south-west sides, while its south-east wall is adjacent to dwelling houses (fig. 2). It is reached through four entrances; two are the contemporary doors leading to the southern patio (figs. 1, 3), while other two former gates, now blocked, were leading to the northern courtyard and are fixed on the western (northern corner) and northern (eastern corner) walls.

Three rectangular windows are fixed between the entrances.

Interior

The synagogue compound includes a rectangular narrow prayer hall with a rectangular patio on either side.

Southern courtyard

The southern courtyard is the current main entrance through which one enters the prayer hall (see: main photo). It is a rectangular peristyle of rounded arches. The courtyard is partly shaded by a thatch used for Sukkoth (Festival of Tabernacles). A water pit is under the thatch, and benches are built along the walls.

The north-eastern arcade leads to the prayer hall through a central door. Two windows flank the door from either side.

A rectangular extension on the western corner encloses built-in alms cells.

Two movable reader's desks are placed in the yard used for daily prayer, usually on hot summer days.

Northern courtyard

The northern courtyard is a rectangular space surrounded by walls. Nowadays it is reached through a door on the north-east wall of the prayer hall. Windows flank the door, two on its right and one on its left.
