20 Description

The prayer hall is rectangular. Its wall are divided by pilasters, and it stands to reason that before the renovation of 1902, those pilasters bore the vaults which rested on a bimah-support in the center of the hall. In 1902 the vaults were replaced by an elaborate interior dome.

The women’s section is connected to the prayer hall through five large arches in the upper tier of the western wall. They probably were installed during the renovation of 1902 and then bricked up after WWII.

The upper parts of the pilasters, above the entablement, are decorated with sunken rectangles in which the zodiac signs are depicted.

The central pilasters flanking the Torah ark on the eastern wall are decorated with plaques painted to look like marble; two Stars of David decorate the wall on either side of the round window above the ark.

20 Description

The lower tier of the western wall of the prayer hall contains the main entrance. An arcade of five arches connects the women's section to the upper tier of the prayer hall.

The upper tier is a result of a reconstruction undertaken either in 1902 or in the 1920s (before 1929). Thus, the pilasters flanking the entrance are preserved only on the lower tier. The spaces between the arches on the upper tier are decorated with sunken rhomboids, and the piers between the arches are decorated with sunken rectangles.

The arches were bricked up after WWII when the building was transformed into a storage facility.

20 Description

The central part of the wooden dome is painted in dark blue with stars, while the rest is painted in light blue. The flat parts of the ceiling as well as the lower rim of the dome are decorated with foliage, which probably dates back to 1902.

The rising sun is inscribed,

"ממזרח שמש עד מבואו נהלל שםיי"

("From the rising of the sun to its setting, the name of the Lord is to be praised”, Ps. 113:3). The inscription is located on the eastern facet above the Torah ark. The sun is painted on top of the foliage, so it was probably added in the 1920s.
