Above her are two of Pharaoh's soldiers. The one on the right lifts a sword, while his bearded companion bites his finger with astonishment. At the lower left-hand corner, Moses' sister, Miriam, is kneeling on a bank of the Nile. She lifts her arms to her forehead in lament, and looks aside at Moses' cradle placed in the river. Loaves of bread lie beside the women. The illustration is depicted against a geometrical division of an architectonic background richly decorated in small floral and geometric patterns. Ex. 1:22, 2:1-4. For the midrashim see Encyclopedia of Islam, s.v. "Musa".
