187-190) x 1590 mm; 11 text columns in 3 sheets; Text column space (131-133) x (82-123) mm; Col. with Haman's sons: 134 x 106 mm. Height of text with decoration: 178-180 mm. Written on the flesh side in square Ashkenazic script. Haman's sons and some letters ('aleph', 'het' and 'tav') as well as acrostics of the name of God, written in larger script in light brown ink. 27 lines per column, except for the names of Haman's sons, written in 11 lines. 3 sheets: I of 4 cols., II of 5 cols., III of 2 cols. Ruling by stylus on the flesh side; 27 horizontal lines ruled across the width of each sheet and 1+1 vertical lines for each column. Ruling is barely discernible.Pricking is discernible on the outer and inner margins of each sheet.

Rolled from left to right. Roller is missing. The opening edge of the scroll was probably cut off. Sheets are sewn by sinew threads. No case for the scroll.

36 Decoration Program

The text is surrounded by decorated borders in sepia. 24 framed text illustrations and genre scenes. Most of them are inscribed and set within the intercolumnar spaces with some in the top and bottom margins. The hanging scene of Haman's ten sons is set within the text column (col. 9). Foliate scrolls inhabited by hunting scenes and various animals and birds.

Amongst the animals are stags, lions, dogs, a fox, rabbits, unicorns, a mammoth, an ox, a sheep, a camel, and a donkey. Amongst the birds are parrots, storks, peacocks, a duck, and an eagle.

Opening edge, back side: the former shelfmarks 6715 and 405 are written on a sticker and the new JHIM shelfmark, ZIH C-254/5 is written on the parchment. Transferred in 1948 to the Museum of the Jewish Historical Institute, Warsaw from the Central Storage of the Ministry of Culture and Art in Marozyn (in the region of Klodzko in Wroclaw county).

Col. 1:

Top margin: A city-scape, represented by a crowded group of buildings and towers, is depicted in the top margin with the Hebrew inscription, שושן, Shushan. The buildings have pointed roofs, wide arches and many windows and the towers are surmounted by spires. To the right of the city, above the margin on the right, is a scene of stags and birds among trees.

The bottom margin contains a scene of Vashti sitting on a throne on the left at the head of a long laid table. She holds a cup in her left hand and a flask in her right. Ten women sit around the table, holding cups and spoons. One of the women sits before the table playing with a dog. Another dog jumps up on the right.Dishes and goblets are arranged on the table. A maidservant stands on the right holding a ladle in one hand and resting her other hand on a vessel. Another vessel stands on the ground to her left.

A Hebrew inscription is written above the scene on the left, גם ושתי המלכה עשתה משתה נשים "Also Vashti the queen made a feast for the women" (Es.1:9).

To the right of the city, above the margin on the right, is a scene of stags and birds among trees.</p> <p>The margin to the right of the text column contains four scenes within rectangular panels set one above the other.</p> <p>The upper panel contains a crowded cityscape with buildings and towers, representing the land of Persia. The buildings have pointed roofs, wide arches and many windows. The towers are surmounted by tall spires and a flag flies from one of them. The Hebrew word,,פרס "Persia", is inscribed twice above the scene.</p> <p>The panel, second from the top in the margin on the right, contains a scene of Ahasuerus sitting on an ornate throne. He is crowned and bearded and holds a scepter. A Hebrew inscription is written above the scene on the right, as follows: אחשורוש יושב על כסא מלכותו, Ahasuerus seated on the throne of his kingdom" (Es. 1:2).</p> <p>The second panel from the bottom, in the right margin, contains a city- scape which represents the land of Media. The city is crowded with buildings and towers. The buildings have pointed roofs, wide arches and many windows and the towers are surmounted by tall spires. A Hebrew inscription is written above the scene as follows, מדי, "Media".</p> <p>The bottom panel in the margin to the right of the text column contains a scene of Ahasuerus sitting on a throne at the head of a laid table. He wears a soft, pointed cap and lifts a goblet.  Three more figures sit around the table. The figure on the left raises a goblet towards the king and the figure on the right holds a cup and faces a servant who approaches from the right with a tray of food. A dog stands at the feet the servant. Dishes and goblets are arranged on the table and a pot containing three vessels rests on the floor by the table. A Hebrew inscription is written above the scene on the right as follows, ויעש המלך משתה, "and the king made a feast" (Es. 1:5).</p> <div> <div>The bottom margin contains a scene of Vashti sitting on a throne on the left at the head of a long laid table. Both have bound hands and legs. The hands of the figure on the right are tied behind his back. Below them, a ladder (?) is set diagonally above a landscape with three trees. A Hebrew inscription is written above the scene as follows,בגתן ותרש תלוים על העץ "Bigthan and Teresh hanged on the tree" (Es. 2:23).</p> <p>The panel second from the top in the margin encloses the bearded Mordecai beneath a decorated arch. He wears a skullcap and sits on a chair next to a table and writes in a book. A Hebrew inscription is written under the arch as follows,מרדכי יושב בשער המלך"Mordecai sat in the king's gate" (Es. 2:21, 23).</p> <p>The third panel from the top in the margin encloses Haman standing facing left, by a tree. He has a long moustache and a wears a soft, long, cloth hat. He holds a staff and a long sword hangs from his belt. Hebrew inscription is written above him as follows, המן הרשע "Haman the villain."</p> <p>The bottom panel in the margin encloses Zeresh facing the viewer and holding a flower to her nose. A Hebrew inscription is written above her,זרש הרשעת "Zeresh the villainess."</p>

20 Description <p>To the left of the text column:</p> <p>In the upper panel is a man training a bear stands against a foliate background at the top of the right margin. The man wears a black hat with a brim and a long buttoned coat, and trains the bear with a whip, held in his right hand. The bear stands on its hind legs and holds a stick in its paws.</p> <p>The top panel in the margin to the left of the text column, encloses the crowned Ahasuerus sitting on a throne. He holds a scepter in one hand and gives his ring to Haman with the other, after having removed it from his finger. Haman stands before the king and stretches out his hand towards him. Hebrew inscription is written above the scene as follows,  ,ויסר המלך את טבעתו מעל ידו ויתן על יד המן "And the king took his ring from his hand and gave it unto Haman" (Es. 3:10).</p> <p>The bottom panel in the margin to the left of the text column encloses Haman standing and holding a balance with scales full of coins. He has a moustache and wears a tall, stiff hat. An open box of coins rests on the ground before him. A Hebrew inscription is written above him as follows, המן שוקל את הכסף "Haman weighing the money" (Es. 3:9).</p>

20 Description <p>Between the two text columns there are three panels:</p> <p>The two upper panels column, enclose a scene of Mordecai on horseback, being led by Haman. Mordecai is bearded and wears an ornate turban and Haman wears a tall, stiff hat and holds a scepter.</p> <p>In the panel above, Haman's daughter stands in the large arched window of a building and pours bed-pan slops down onto her father's head (TB Meg. 16:1). A Hebrew inscription is written above Mordecai and Haman as follows, מרדכי רכב על סוס המלך והמן הלך לפניו, "Mordecai rode the king's horse and Haman walked before him" (alluding to Es. 6:11).</p> <p>The lower panel, encloses a scene of Esther, Ahasuerus and Haman seated at a laid table raising their goblets. The crowned Esther sits in the center, looking to her left towards Haman. A Hebrew inscription is written above the scene, as follows, משתה אסתר "Esther's banquet" (Es. 5:4-5).</p> <p> </p>

20 Description <p>To the right of the text column: </p> <p>The upper scene in the margin to the right of the text column shows two men fighting. The man on the right (a Jew) is bearded, and wears a skullcap and a long coat. In his right hand he raises a sword against a man wearing a tall, stiff hat (his enemy), who stands beside him. The Jew grabs the lapel of his enemy's jacket (alluding to Es. 9:5).</p> <p>The lower panel of the margin to the right of the text column, encloses two men walking and pointing to the left. They both wear pointed triangular hats and hold a cane. A Hebrew inscription is written above them as follows, הרצים יצאו דחופים "The posts went out, being hastened" (from Es. 8:14).</p> <p>The middle panel in the margin to the right of the text column encloses the bearded Mordecai wearing a turban and long coat, facing left. He holds the king's decree in his right hand and a scepter in the other hand (alluding to Es. 8:15, 17).</p> <p>A scene of the hanging of Haman's ten sons is depicted at the center of the left text column. Five sons hang on each side of decorated gallows constructed of three poles, with their hands tied behind their backs (alluding to Es. 9:7-10). The gallows are set on the crest of a hill dotted with trees. Two men, standing on the right slope of the hill, point at the hanging scene.</p>
