20 Description This rectangular panel depicting a central inscription flanked by two seven branched menorah, is situated near the entrance of the Synagogue in the western side of the central nave. The panel interrupts the geometrical border which surrounds the central field of the mosaic just below the dedicatory inscription panel. The panel is divided into three section. The central one depicts a central inscription within a wreath, while the lateral sections are occupied by a seven branched menorah flanked by a mahta, a shophar and an etrog. The fragmentary Hebrew inscription reads as follow: Peace upon Israel שלום על ישראל The wreath which surrounds the inscription is composed of groups of three leaves linked at the top with a circle. The left menorah seems to be a three legged one, the stem is composed of alternating rectangular and round links the branches are made of alternating round and triangular links. The stem and the branches are topped by a round lamp seen from the side, with a knob handle on the outer side and a burning wick facing the centre. On the right of the menorah is an etrog and a tip of a lulav. On the left is a shofar and a mahtah (incense shovel). The stem and the branches of the right menorah are composed of alternating, irregular, rectangular and round links ending with square tops from which flames spring. Right to the menorah it is possible to see the remains of a shofar, and of a mahta. All the panel is framed by a double plain strip filled by stepped triangles. Only two fragments with the mahtah and etrog survive today.
