20 Description The synagogue's building is orinted north-south with its facade on the south. Outside the entrance is a small portico with stone floor that is reached by three steps. The Main entrance was slightly to the east of the building central axis, probably in order to leave room to the Ark of Law inside. Above the lintel of the entrance found a relieving arch. The building was crowned with a gable topped by an eagle. A side entrance located on the western wall. The prayer hall has a central nave and three aisles. Two rows of columns parallel to the long walls and an addditional row parallel to the northern wall. The columns supported an archiraves. Near the southern wall there was Adicula of the ark.

CO : The synagogue is preserved to a height of several courses, pariticularly in the southern wall.
HIS : The arabic name of the site means "Mother of the arches" after a nymphaeum with two arches built over the spring,south of the Synagogue. The site discovered by L.Oliphant (1884), survayed by Schumacher (1885). A limited excavation conducted by H.Kohl and C.Vatzinger. The site was survayed by E.L. Sukenik (1932), and by Z.Ma'oz (1980).

20 Description The arch is decorated with five strips. The lower strip carries row of round objects. The second strip carries flower buds. The third strip is decorated with zigzag pattern. The forth strip carries row of triangles. The fifth strip is decorated with three round objects similar to those on the lower strip. Triple leaf overlap small part of the three lower strips.

The capital is decorated in the center with an eagle with spread wings. On both sides of the eagle a band of ovoloi is seen. On the left hand there are two rosettes (one above the other), one of ten petales and the other of eight petals), between the two rosettes there is a row of three fluts. A band of leaves is seen on the right side of the capital. On the capital's side relief of two ovoloi one above the other, between them a separating line.
