20 Description This panel contained a large circle within which was another circle. In the space between the two circles were laid twelve small interlacing circles,of which two only remain in some damaged condition. One of these small circles,on the central axis of the floor is almost complete, and shows an ox facing to the right, one of his horns missing through damage to the upper part of the circle. The other small circle to the right is very badly broken. It shows the head of a horned animal, facing left, and two of its feet. Above the animal's head appear three Hebrew letters("raim"),with traces of a fourth letter preceding. According to Sukenik we have here presumable the end of the word Ephraim- one the twelve tribes, whose symbol is here taken to be wild ox . If this be so,we may assume that the damaged portion of the other circle formerly contained the word "Menasseh",symbolized here by an ox.> Both these small interlacing circles are framed by plain strips. The outer circle was surrounded by a guilloche border. Of the inner circle only a small fragment of the guilloche border remains, and above it a triangle between two small circles of the tribes. In the triangular spaces between the small circles and the border of the big circle, dolphins are portrayed. One dolphin is complete, the other is destroyed, except for its tail.

20 Description The excavations established that the synagogue had stood on a peak to the north of the village and that only few remains had survived. The synagogue was basilical in plan: two rows of four columns devided the structure into a central nave and two lateral aisles. The columns stood on pedestals, had Attic bases and they were topped with Corinthian capitals. The synagogue pavement was decorated with mosaic pavement but only a few fragments of it were preserved.

HIS : Japhia an Arab village in the Lower Galilee, called Yafa,is situated about 2 kilometers soutwest of Nazaret. In the bible,Japhia is mentioned as one of of the cities of Zebulun (Joshua 19:12). The Place is apparently mentioned in the el-Amarna letters from the fourteenth century b.c. where it is called Iapu. During the Jewish War, Josephus Flavius strengthened the defenses of the city, whose inhabitants took an active part in the revolt (War II, 573. Life, 37). Josephus describes the site as the largest village in Galilee, very strongly fortified and containing a dense population (Life,45,230). Titus captured the city in the summer of 67 C.E. and killed most of its inhabitants (War III,289-306). There is no litterary information concerning Jewish settlement at Japhia after the destruction of the Second Temple. According to a late Cristian tradition, the apostle James, son of Zebedee, was born here. The location of the Roman-Byzantine city is certain. Sukenik dated the Synagogue towards the end of the third century C.E. beginning of the fourth. Guerin, who visited Japhia in the nineteen cetury reported about several columns and two underground systems that survived in the site from the old city. In 1921,L.H.Vincent published an article in which he described and illustrated two large carved stones which had been reused in the village. He identified those stones as lintels from an ancient synagogue of the third century C.E. In the summer of 1950,E.L.Sukenik and N.Avigad excavated the remains of the synagogue on behalf of the Hebrew University.

20 Description The only remaining sections of the mosaic floor were recoverd in the southern aisle and the western part of the nave. The central nave was apparently decorated by diffrent mosaic panels. Only remains of the western-most panel survive. This panel depicts a circle with twelve circles within it. It is possible that this panel represent the zodiac wheel (Goodenough)or the symbols of the twelve tribes(Sukenik). Only two circles are extant and they depict a buffalo and beside it a fragmentary inscription ([Epr]raim?), and an ox. The space around the large outer circle was decorated with animal and floral designs. The western strip of the nave, above the western panel with the circle, was divided into different sized panels decorated with designs of plants and living creatures. There appear to have been five such panels originally but only the southern-most survives. It was preserved in its entirety. On it is a depiction of an eagle. The nave was surrounded by a double guilloche border. The floor of the south aisle was divided into geometric panels of different sizes each surrounded by a guilloch border. The intercolumnar spaces are decorated with geometric panels.

20 Description The space around the large outer circle was decorated with animal and floral designs. The only remaining portion shows a runing scroll pattern, with acanthus leaves as the main motif at the south-west corner. From among these a tiger emerges, one of its hind paws still hidden behind the foliage. The scroll, bearing fruit and leaves, winds towerds the center,on the other side of which the the same motif is repeated. It may be assumed that a similar motif ran the whole way round the circle.

20 Description

The space around the large outer circle was decorated with animal and floral designs. The only remaining portion is at at the south-west corner and shows a running scroll pattern with acanthus leaves as the main motif. From among the leaves emerges a tiger with one of its hind paws still hidden behind the foliage. The scroll, bearing fruit and leaves, winds towards the center on the other side of which the the same motif is repeated. It may be assumed that a similar motif ran the whole way round the circle.
