20 Description

The Hebrew text of the Book of Esther is inscribed in wide columns that are framed in lying rectangles. Above and below the text panels are painted the episodes from the Book of Esther and full figures (some of them represent Esther story protagonists; others are unidentified). The panels in the upper margins are separated by roundels with Yiddish inscriptions based on the text of the Book of Esther; every roundel is decorated with four fleurs-de-lys. Whereas the panels in the lower margins are interspersed by sunflowers. In the spaces between the text panels, human figures are shown and in one case, there is a narrative scene (hanging of Haman's sons). The same scheme features sheets nos. 2, 3, and 4, whereas the decoration, color scheme, and handwriting of the first membrane are completely different from them; this suggests that the sheet is a later addition to the scroll.

20 Description

The first sheet contains two panels; in the first of them, three initial benedictions are inscribed and in the second one, there is an opening section of the Megillah. Above and below the benediction panel, there are circles. The space between the benediction and the first text panels is filled with stylized leafy twigs.

The decoration above the first text panel is composed of 3 interlocking rings formed of leafy twigs. Inside them, in the Latin alphabet, names of 4 countries are written in pencil (from right to left): "Autriche, Prusse, Russie, France". The drawing may refer to the Quintuple Alliance of 1818 signed at the congress of Aix-la-Chapelle (Aachen) when France joined the Quadruple Alliance created by Austria, Prussia, Russia, and Great Britain in 1815; however, Great Britain is not mentioned in the opening decoration of the megillah. Below it, 3 flowers are drawn (possibly two tulips and a hydrangea).

20 Description

The first illustration in the scroll (sheet no. 2, above text panel no. 2) depicts the moment of the beheading of Queen Vashti that is not mentioned in the biblical text. It is flanked by roundels with Yiddish inscriptions (cited below) and below them, two figures of men wearing fashionable costumes are shown. It is difficult to determine who they are but they may represent advisors of King Ahasuerus (Es. 1:13-15).

Roundel 1 (on the right):

קיניג אחשורוש/ איז וואל גימיט גיוועזן/ אין וויין :אלזו האט ער/ פרשאפט דיא ושתי צו/ ברינגין נאקיט אריין : ושתי/ האט עז אבר ניט וועלין/ טון : וואו אריבר זיא/ אנטפאנגן האט אירן/ פר דינטן לון :

"The king was in a good mood after drinking wine and he called Vashti to come naked. However, she did not want to do it, so she received well-deserved payment."

Roundel 2 (on the left):

: ממוכן טוט זאגן :/ מן זאל ושתי איר/ קאפף אוועק שלאגין :/ אונ' אויז צו טרומפיטן :/ וועלכי פרויא דיא ניט/ פאלגט איר מן דיא/ זעלביג זאל מן :/ : טיטן

"Memuchan says: Vashti should be beheaded and it should proclaimed that the same will be done with a woman who does not obey her husband."

The second illustration (sheet no. 2, below text panel no. 2) depicts a mounted messenger blowing the trumpet (possibly alludes to Es. 1:22). Next to his head, the capital letter "B" written in pencil is visible. The scene is flanked by sunflowers. Above them, two figures of men wearing fashionable costumes are shown. It is difficult to determine who they are but they may represent advisors of King Ahasuerus (Es. 1:13-15).

20 Description

The third illustration in the scroll (sheet no. 2, above text panel no. 3) depicts a man standing at the gate. His black costume and a large flat cap on the head suggest that he is Mordecai at the palace gate (Es. 2:19 and/or 2:21). The depiction is flanked by roundels with Yiddish inscriptions (cited below) and below them, a figure of a man wearing a fashionable costume and the king are depicted. It is difficult to determine who is the men standing on the right but possibly he is one of King Ahasuerus' advisors (Es. 1:13-15).

Roundel 2 (on the right):

"Memuchan says: Vashti should be beheaded and it should be proclaimed that the same will be done with a woman who does not obey her husband"

Roundel 3 (on the left):

Illustration no. 4 (sheet no. 2, below text panel no. 3) depicts a figure of a woman standing between the trees. She wears a costume contemporary to the manuscript's maker but it lacks any characteristic feature or attribute that prevents recognition of the figure. Next to her left arm, the word "Garten"(?) in the Latin alphabet is written. The depiction is flanked by sunflowers and above them, a figure of a man wearing a fashionable costume (on the right) and the king are depicted (on the left). It is difficult to determine who is the men standing on the right but possibly he is one of King Ahasuerus' advisors (Es. 1:13-15).

Illustration no. 11 (sheet no. 4, above text panel no. 7) a man - presumably the king - sits at the table that is placed between the trees with an open book in front of him. The presence of the gallows with two bodies suspending from it (visible in the background) suggests that he reads the fragment of the empire's chronicles telling about the plot of Bightan and Teresh against him (Es. 6:1-3 Es. 2:23). The panel is flanked by roundels with Yiddish inscriptions (cited below) and below them are depicted two figures of the king.

"The king has a bad dream. He sends for a scribe and orders him to read the chronicles of the empire"

20 Description

Illustration no. 14 (sheet no. 4, below text panel no. 8) depicts a figure of a man with a raised hand standing between the trees. He wears a costume contemporary to the manuscript's maker but the depiction lacks any characteristic feature or attribute that prevents recognition of the figure. Possibly, he points either to the gallows on which Haman is hanged or to the gallows with the bodies of his sons. The panel is flanked by sunflowers and above them are depicted: a figure of the king (on the right) and the ten sons of Haman hanged on the gallows (Es. 9:14).
