20 Description

A parchment fragment from a Hebrew manuscript of a Medieval Ashkenazi Pentateuch (front cover: Deut19:21-20:1; back cover: Deut. 19:14), including alternating Targum Onkelos for each verse, and massorah magna (written above and below the main text space) and parva (written in the intercolumnar space).     The fragment was used as a a book binding for the German printed book Ordenliche Beschreibung mit was stattlichen Ceremonien ... den Orden deß Guldin Flüß..., published by Johannes Mayer in Dilingen (Germany) in 1587.

In the inner front and back covers of this parchemt-binding there are two glued pages from an Yiddish printed book Sefer brant shpigl published in Basel, in the printing house of Conrad Waldkirch, in 1602. See the scan of the book, fol. 214v [scaned page 428] and fol. 217 [scanned page 433]. We are extremely grateful to Dr. Claudia Rosenzweig of the Bar-Ilan University, who succeeded to identify the Yiddish book.
