20 Description

The classroom (Talmud – Torah) (p.32) is located above the women’s gallery. The walls of this room are covered with liturgical texts, and a wooden ceiling is painted. The motives and stylistic of the paintings are unique to the region, as they are corresponded with the paintings of the wooden synagogues in Eastern Europe from the 18th century. The wooden panels of flat ceiling are covered with various animals and birds, many of which have an allegorical meaning, as well as a variety of symbolic images and carpet floral decorations.

A separate motif appears on each of the boards of the ceiling. The images depicted include a black bird with a curved neck, sitting between two red lilies (perhaps a raven?), and ornamental flowers.

The images depicted include ornamental flowers and a squirrel cracking a nut.

The images depicted include ornamental foliage and a vase with flowers.
