  Hanukkah lamp, Baghdad, 19th century

© Center for Jewish Art, Photographer: Radovan, Zev,

The Hanukah lamp is made of brass and consists of a base and a back wall.

A row of eight round glass holders is attached to the back wall. Each glass holder is surmounted by a bird facing right. The back wall is composed of openwork units, a bar, and an uneven arch. Four harp-like units are attached to the base and bar. A pair of flowers rises from the base between the harps. A flat hamsah with spread fingers appears at the center of the base. The hamsah bears an inscription: בן פורת ##יוסף

!Ben Porat##Joseph! (Gen. 49:22)##

Four smaller flat hamsahs are mounted on the bar, above each harp, with a flower at the bar's center. A flower flanked by birds is on each side of the arch.

The crescent-shaped crest bears a star in its center.

A glass holder for a shamash is attached beneath the crest to a back bar.
