20 Description

The painting depicts the Jerusalem Temple in the form of the Dome of the Rock (or the Dome of the Rock on the site of the Jerusalem Temple). The huge octagonal structure with a large cupola is surrounded by numerous other smaller buildings. White houses with red tile roofs and various towers extend the view of Jerusalem to the horizon. The city is surrounded by a fortified wall with an entrance gate. The foreground depicts a valley with sandy paths and trees that lies between Jerusalem and the viewer.

With slight variations, this painting appears to copy the similar depiction by Mendel Grünberg (Grinberg) on the north wall of the main prayer hall of the Grain Merchants' Synagogue in Bacău.

20 Description

The painting depicts a (Carpathian) mountain landscape. A river flows between green and blue mountain peaks. A yelllow sun shines in the blue sky that is dotted with white cumulus clouds. Musical instruments (trumpet, violin, clarinet, flutes, lute, and cymbals) hang from two large birch trees growing on the near bank of the river. An open book (apparently Psalms) lies on the ground underneath the trees. A drum with drumsticks also lies on the ground near the book.

The walls around the perimeter of the prayer hall contain paintings depicting holy places and other scenes in the Land of Israel. The artist added painted frames, cords, and nails to create the illusion of hanging paintings rather than murals. Part of these compositions were repainted during restoration undertaken in the 1970s.
