36 Summary and Remarks
This passageway is longer and wider than most of the burial halls in the site. There appear to have been decorations also on the right wall of the arched passageway, but this section have been damaged so that only traces of red paint indicate that various figures had once been drawn there.

20 Description A complex geometric pattern is drawn on the back wall and various geometric designs cover the ceiling of arcosolium 3. The drawing on the back wall covers the entire surface of the wall and is framed by a line fringed with elongated $$9semi-circles. From the top of this frame starts a band of two parallel lines, also fringed with semi-circles, with zigzags between, running along the top of the vault. Parallel lines, perpendicular to the band, link it to a horizontal line running around the walls on either side of the vault, somewhat above the shelves.

36 Summary and Remarks
In both figures the head is exaggerated in relation to the body. The eyes of the right figure are depicted by two big dots, the arched eyebrows and the elongated nose by thick lines, and the hair by many thin lines. Mazar identified the $$9criss-cross pattern decoration of the rectangle as a short tunic with belt on the hips. He also identified the unclear object holded by figure on the left as possibly a shield (scutum). This two figures are probably two gladiators in a picture of a duel. See bibliography.

36 Summary and Remarks
The head of the animal drawn in profile is represented by a rough circle; its eye is indicated by a dot, its tail by a horizontal line, and its legs by four perpendicular lines ending in horizontal strokes pointing leftwards. Mazar claims that the animal may represent a lion. The details of the face of the diving man are drawn in dots and lines; the hair is indicated by lines springing from the skull; the legs are indicated by two long lines ending $$9in feet; the hanging arms are represented by double lines running in continuation of the lines of the body; all five fingers of the hand are indicated. Mazar identifies the criss-cross decoration of the rectangle as a tunic. Mazar claims that this composite scene has a $$9specific meaning. The drawing is primitive and carelessly executed. 36 Summary and Remarks
The face, eyes, nose and mouth of the soldier are indicated by hatched lines and dots. The square body whith enormous chest is exagerated in relation to the head. The Roman military tunic is girded at the hips and leaves the thighs bare. $$9The artist seems $$9to depict the legionaire Germanos, the son of Isaac, of Palmyra whose name was written on the wall to the right of this graffito. The figure of the man seems to hold a spear, but the line indicating this weapon is very thin See $$9bibliography.

20 Description

A seven-branched menorah flanked on both sides by a rosette is placed on the arched passageway leading from room VI to room VII. The menorah has the form of a stylized plant: the seven branches issue from a short, tree-like stem. To the right of the menorah is a rosette consisting of six petals within a circle. To the left is a bigger, incomplete whirling rosette within a circle. Above the menorah is carved a geometric object resembling a square.
