20 Description The synagogue floor, from the north-west entrance to the south-east apse, is entirely decorated with mosaic pavements in the nave, the west aisle and the intercolumnar spaces. Some mosaic fragments also survive in the east aisle and in the narthex. The nave mosaic is divided into three panels, from the entrance to the apse: 1. The Sacrifice of Isaac (8023) preceded by a dedicatory inscription (5340) 2. A zodiac panel in the centre (5190), 3. Sanctuary Implements (5245). The depictions in all panels are designed to be viewed from the entrance, except for the zodiac signs and the seasons facing Helios in the centre. All the panels are surrounded by a decorative border framed by parallel lines and are divided by similar lines. The eastern border consists of inhabited scrolls whereas the southern and western borders include rhomboids enclosing birds, floral and geometric motifs. The northern border, which includes two Greek and Aramaic inscriptions, is flanked by a reversed bull and lion. All the depictions in these framing bands, including the lion and the bull, are designed to be viewed from the centre of the nave, except for the inscriptions which face the entrance of the synagogue in the north. The intercolumnar spaces between the nave and the west aisle are filled by four geometric mosaic panels of different sizes. The whole western aisle is covered by four continous panels of different geometric patterns.

The tesserae are made of limestone and laid in straight parallel lines. Curved lines of tesserae lines follow round outlines. The average density of tesserae ranges between (9x9)-(10x10) 10cm2. A higher number is noticeable in the heads and faces of the figures (11X11)-(12X14), while the geometric panels are characterized by a lower density (7x8)-(8x8).##The outlines are composed of 1-2 lines of black tesserae which, in most cases, are followed by 1-3 lines of background tesserae. However, coloured outlines can also be seen. The colours of the tesserae, besides white and black, are one or two shades of gray, wine red, brick red, brown, ochre, sun-yellow and emerald green.

20 Description

The rectangular panel of the sacrifice of Isaac is situated on the northern side of the nave below the Zodiac panel and is the first panel which visitors see upon entry. On the right of the panel, Abraham and Isaac are depicted before an altar. A ram is set in the middle of the panel beneath a hand in the sky above, and two servants stand with an ass on the left. Above this scene, is a row of palm trees set in a band separated from the main panel by a black line.

Abraham, a tall bearded figure, wears a long tunic and has a halo around his head. He stands before a rectangular burning altar and holds up young Isaac in his left hand, towards the altar. Abraham holds a long knife in his right hand before him. Isaac, depicted as a small child, wears a scarf on his neck and crosses his arms. Hebrew inscriptions of their names are situated above these figures.

The standing ram, which is overturned and set vertically on its tail, is positioned to the right of Abraham, tied by a rope to a tree. Inscribed in Hebrew above the ram, are the words: "And behold.... a ram" (Gen. 22:13).

Above the ram, the hand of God emerges towards Abraham from a cloud with rays. The cloud overlaps the band of palm trees and the main panel. Below the hand is a Hebrew inscription which reads: “Lay not thine" (Gen. 22:12).

The two servants and the ass stand on the left by the ram. The servant on the right wears a short tunic and holds the reins of the ass in one hand and a whip in the other. The servant on the left stands behind the ass. The ass wears a bell around its neck and has a saddle on its back.

Branches are scattered beneath the servants and the ram, and to the right of Abraham.
