20 Description

The ethrog container is a rectangular case with wide rims.

It consists of a container and a lid.

Each side is decorated or inscibed with inscriptions. The lid is decorated with the four species: ethrog (boughs of goodly trees), lulav (branchs of palm trees), hadas (boughs of thick trees) and arava (Willows of the brook).

The ethrog is depicted lying in the center of the lid with its apex on the left. It is surrounded by lulav in the lower left corner, arava in the lower right corner and two hadas in the upper corners.

The lulav is depicted as a branch of dates, the arava as a branch with long leaves and each hadas as a circle surrounded by three serrated leaves.

An inscription in square letters begins on the cover and continues along the sides of the container. It reads:

פרי עץ הדר וכפת תמרים## וענף## עץ עבות## וערבי נחל )ויקרא כג:מ(

"The boughs of goodly trees, branches of palm trees, and the boughs of thick trees and the willows of the brook" (Lev. 23:40 S.J).

The description of the branch of dates stands for "branches of palm trees". The front side of the container is inscribed:

מרדכי בר )בן רבי( יצחק צבי זל בר )בן רבי(## משה מאיר זל גאלדשטיין## מגזע טורי זהב

"Mordekhai son of Rabbi Yizhak Zvi of blessed memory, son of Rabbi Moshe Meir of blessed memory, Goldstein of the family Turey Zahav".

The right side of the container is decorated with a lion couchant amidst high grass. Its tail is folded beneath its hind legs and is then raised above its back pointing right. The left side is decorated with a deer running between two scroll-like foliate motifs. The under-side of the container is inscribed:

הצייר שבתי זק##בן שמונים וחמשה##תרצ"ז

"The painter Shabtai Zack## eighty five years old## (5)697 (1937)".

The inscription is flanked above and below by foliate scrolls.
