20 Description

An exemplar of the paper Esther scrolls in which the decorations and the text are printed from metal plates engraved by Mordecai ben Josel (Jozl) Sofer of Nitra. It opens with four benedictions recited before and after the Megillah reading that are followed by Asher Heni and Shoshanat Yaakov liturgical poems. The text of the Book of Esther starts with a decorated and enlarged incipit and in the subsequent text columns are incorporated small rectangular frames with the episodes depicting the Purim story. The scroll ends with a frame with the note of the engraver. The ornamentation of the scroll shows some common features with the pattern created by the same engraver in 1834 (in the Index see "First Nitra Esther Scroll").

36 Summary and Remarks

Mordecai ben Josel (Jozl) Sofer of Nitra known also as Marcus Donath was a prolific artist active over the span of at least twenty-three years between ca. 1819 and ca. 1842, in Nitra. Donath was an expert religious scribe (sofer stam) who also copied and decorated various Hebrew manuscripts, but he left his trace as an engraver and a silversmith too. His works include the prayer books especially for the circumcision ceremonies, two types of decorated megillot Esther, possibly two mizraḥ plaques and a shiviti, an omer calendar, an amulet, and a Torah crown together with a shield. His works show him not only as a professional scribe but also as a well-trained calligrapher who created ornamental incipits, ribbon letters as well as masterfully executed micrographic decorations. between ca. 1819 - ca. 1842

In institutional and private collections are stored other exemplars of the scrolls decorated with the same pattern.

For another decorated megillat Esther created by the artist in 1837 see ID 11847 in the Index.

For the other works of the artist see also IDs 23735, 21799, and 2393 in the Index.

The numbers of text columns given in the descriptions concern the columns in which the text of the Megillah is printed and do not concern the columns with the benedictions and liturgical poems.

20 Description

The illustration closes the column containing the final section of the Asher Heni poem that is followed by Shoshanat Yaakov poem and is placed just below the text. In the frame probably two episodes are joined - the feast of King Ahasuerus and the feast of Queen Vashti; the king and the queen with crowns on their heads and in sophisticated attire are shown on the right. Eight guests sit at the long table above which a chandelier is hanging. In the upper-left corner, a group of musicians playing on various instruments is placed. They stand on a balcony and just below it a Hebrew inscription is placed: והשקות בכלי זהב וכלים מכלים שונים - "And they gave them drink in vessels of gold, (the vessels being diverse one from another)" (Es. 1:7).

20 Description

In the lower-left corner of the third text column, the moment of death of Queen Vashti is depicted. The queen is kneeling between two women who strangulate her with a scarf. The scene is related to the extra-biblical tales saying that Vashti was killed after she refused to appear in front of the king during the feast. Most likely, the engraver was inspired by a similar illustration incorporated in the Amsterdam printed scrolls of the early 18th century that in the Index are called "the scrolls with portrait medallions" and "the scrolls with landscapes"; however, the direct source for this representation remains unknown.

20 Description

In the lower-left corner of the third text column, the moment of the wedding of Ahasuerus and Esther is depicted. The royal couple stands in front of a man whose garments allude to the clothing of the high priest. Most likely, the engraver was inspired by a similar illustration incorporated in the Amsterdam printed scrolls of the early 18th century representing two groups that in the Index are called "the scrolls with portrait medallions" and "the scrolls with landscapes"; it seems that their creators were familiar with similar representations present in European art that are the paintings showing the scene of the marriage of Mary and Joseph. On the right, a bearded man (possibly Mordecai) is standing and pointing with his index finger to the wedding scene.

In the lower-left corner of the third column of the Megillah's text, the scene of Mordecai's mourning is depicted. Mordecai in a barrette on his head and wearing a long coat (sarbel) is kneeling next to a tree. He tears his clothing while a mounted messenger of the king blows the trumpet probably just before the reading of Haman's decree on the annihilation of all the Jews in the Persian Empire that he holds in his right hand.
