20 Description

The opening the text of the Haggadah is the initial word “when coming” כשבאין,  written in large square Ashkenazi script in dark brown ink outlined in red ink. The word is set in a rectangular panel filled withfoliate scrolls enclosing palmette motifsand some dotted golf club motifs in spared ground technique.  The panel is surrounded by red scrolls.  On the upper left corner of the panel is a  developed trifoil motif and bellow it  is a grotesque face.

At the center of the page is the initial word “Thus were finished” ויכלו, which opens the Kiddush, is  written in bold square Ashkenazi script in dark brown ink. The panel which extends also around the ascender of the ‘Lamed’ creating a triangular roof around it, is filled withfoliate scrolls with palmet motifs in spare ground technique in brown-reddish ink. The panel is decorated by tendrils  and on the right hand side the tendril extends along the inner margin.

 

An initial letter “Beit” (bedikat)בfor the marginal commentary of the haggadah is written on the upper left corner of the page in large square Ashkenazi script in dark brown ink, it is decorated with golf club motif  in spare ground technique in green ink. Tendrils extend from all sides of the panel.

20 Description The initial word “It is therefore” לפיכך, written in large square Ashkenazi script in dark brown ink, is set in a large panel of three horizontal compartments. The initial word is set in the central compartment decorated with foliate scrolls enclosing palmette motifs on spare ground technique in red ink. The upper and lower compartments are decorated with running kiddny shaped leaves. Extending from the right side of the panel are tendrils and on the left side, attached to the letter ‘Resh’ ר is a grotesque face wearing a hat. Underneath the grotesque is a running band of bead and spike motif. The initial letter ‘lamed’ ל (lefichach) )It is therefore), for the marginal commentary of the haggadah, written in square Ashkenazi script in dark brown ink, is set in a small square panel filled with scrolls enclosing palmet motif on spare ground technique in green ink. The initials for word “G-d” ( הקב"ה) is decorated with V marks in alternating red and brown ink that create a triangle above the word. The blessing before reading the small Hallel at the bottom of the page is rubricated in red.

20 Description The initial word for the piyyut “Az Rov Nissim” אז רב ניסים which occupies the width of the text space, is written in large square Ashkenazi script in dark brown ink and outlined in red ink. The panel is filled with delicate foliate scrolls enclosing palmet motifs in spare ground technique. The panel is surrounded on three sides(left, top & right) with a running bead and spike motif and on the bottom is a stylized scrolls. From the upper right corner of the panel extends a spray with three scroll branches, bellow it is a grotesque face with a pertruding tongue. A rubrication in red ink appears twice for the repeating line of the piyyut “Va’yehi Ha’hazi Halila” (And it happened at the middle of the night) ויהי בחצי הלילה .

20 Description The initial word “Moshe” משה which opens the book of Tractate Avot, occupies the width of the text space. It is written within a rectangular panel outlined in a thick green color line and filled with red color foliate sprays. The word is written in large square Ashkenazi script in green color with silver powder dots forming flowers. Each letter is outlined by, yellow, white and red lines from the letter outward. On the top of the page is the initial word “All” כל which opens the verses recieted before the reading of Tractate Avot chapters is written in bold square Ashkenazi script in dark brown ink within a rectangular panel, filled with foliate scroll which enclose a palmette motif in green penwork on spare ground technique. A band of strung beads in green ink is above the panel. The ascender of the “lamed”, protrudes from the panel and is decorated with a fleur-de-lys motif. Tendrils extend from the top, left and bottom sides of the panel.

20 Description

The initial word “Remember us” זכרנו, which begins the section of the Amidah recited during theTen Days of Penitence, is written in bold square Ashkenazi script in dark brown ink. The letters are surrounded with pink and green lines, within a rectangular panel, which occupies 2/3 of the width of the text space.  The panel, which is filled with pink & green sprays ending in pinkish & green dots on spare ground technique, is surrounded by a band of half palmet running motif in pinkish ink. The right corners of the  panel  end with clover blossoms & the left corners ends with trifoils.  Green tendrils surround all sides of the panel and extend into the outer margin.

At the middle of the page is the initial word “”Thou” אתה, which is part of the Amidah prayer.  The word which is written in bold square Ashkenazic script in dark brown ink, is within a rectangular panel filled with green scrolls enclosing palmet motifs on spare ground technique.  Tendrills extend from all sides of the panel.

20 Description The initial word “By ten” בעשרה which opens the fifth chapter of Tractate Avot, which occupies the width of the text space written in bold square Ashkenazi script in dark brown ink and is outlined with pink wrigelly line. Between the letters and within their spaces are scrolls enclosing palmettes in red ink in spared ground technique incorporating within the space of the letters “Beit”, “Resh” & “Heh”, two fowls and a grotesque in spared ground technique Tendrils are attached to the outer and inner margins of the panel. Rubricated text for the verses recited at the end of a chapters in Tractate Avot, is cased in three double lined frames in red ink. The 3 frames, for the 3 text lines are decorated at the right hand side with a trifoil motif within triangles.

20 Description The initial word “Remember us” זכרנו, which begins the section of the Amidah recited during theTen Days of Penitence, is written in bold square Ashkenazi script in dark brown ink. The letters are surrounded with pink and green lines, within a rectangular panel, which occupies 2/3 of the width of the text space. The panel, which is filled with pink & green sprays ending in pinkish & green dots on spare ground technique, is surrounded by a band of half palmet running motif in pinkish ink. The right corners of the panel end with clover blossoms & the left corners ends with trifoils. Green tendrils surround all sides of the panel and extend into the outer margin At the middle of the page is the initial word “”Thou” אתה, which is part of the Amidah prayer. The word which is written in bold square Ashkenazic script in dark brown ink, is within a rectangular panel filled with green scrolls enclosing palmet motifs on spare ground technique. Tendrills extend from all sides of the panel.

At the bottom of the page is the initial word “night” ליל which opens the piyyut “ליל שימורים אותו אל חצה” (Davidson III 726 pp. 33) recited on the first eve of Passover. The word is written in bold square Ashkenazi script in red ink for the first “Lamed” ל and in dark brown ink for the two other letters. The word is enclosed within a rectangular panel divided into two vertical compartments, the right compartment in green ink and the left in red. The panel is filled with a criss-cross ground, which incorporates three grotesques and palmettes in spared ground technique. Tendrils in green and red ink extend from all sides of the panel. On the left side of the panel, intertwined in the tendrils, is a standing human grotesque. On the top of the page is the initial word “blessed” ברוך, written in bold square Ashkenazi script in dark brown ink. The word is enclosed within a rectangular panel in brown ink. Tendrils in green and brown ink extend into the margins. The opening word is enclosed within a small rectangular panel filled with foliate branches in brown? penwork.

The initial word “Holy” קדוש, at the upper part of the page, is written in bold square Ashkenazi script in dark brown ink. The panel is filled with foliate scrolls enclosing palmette and golf club motives in red-pinkish pen work on spared ground technique. A grotesque extends from the left side of the panel and tendrils surround the panel. The initial word “Thou” אתה, on the lower part of the page, is written in bold square Ashkenazi script in dark brown ink within a brown penwork panel. The panel, which is filled with, foliate scrolls enclosing palmette and golf club motifs in spared ground technique. The top of the panel is decorated with three triangular roofs and turrets on either side. The edge of the roof is decorated with a choufleur motif and inside the roof’s space are trifoils. In the left margin of the panel is a grotesque with a protruding tongue and a tendril extend from the right side of the panel into the outer margins.

20 Description

The initial word “Hoshana” הושענא, which opens the prayer for the Hoshaanot of Sukkut, occupies the full width of the text space, is written in bold square Ashkenazi script in dark brown ink. Within the letters, are several animals in spare ground technique including deer, a dragon, a unicorn, fowls & dogs or wolves. The roof of the letter “Hei” ה incorporates a hunting scene of a dog or wolf chasing a deer. Each letter is surrounded by a wriggly line.

20 Description The initial word “Thou” אתה which opens the prayer for the Hakkafoth of Simhat Torah which occupies the width of the text space is written in bold square Ashkenazi script in dark brown ink. Various animals such as dragons, dogs , deer, hares and birds are depicted either within the letters in spare ground technique or between the space of the letters and above them, in pen-work, some of which are in hunt scenes. A ground line on which a dog’s head chasing a hare is depicted extends from the letter “aleph” and underneath this ground line is a flying bird with an unidentified object in its beak. Within the top part of the letter “Taph” is a dog chasing a deer, while in it’s space is a dog with a fowl in its mouth. Within the space of the letter “Heh” is a dog biting a deer’s leg and on the left is a stork with a snake in it’s beak. A ground line is depicted between the end of the word and the scribal justification on the left and on it are two trees and two dogs’ heads are flanking and chasing a deer. The junctions of the strokes of the letters are decorated with human masks and twisted dragon heads.
