20 Description

P. 17. The picture illustrates Song of Solomon 3:1-5. It is divided into three scenes. Below each scene is written the text its illustrating. The two first sections depict Shulamite. The third depicts Solomon and Shulamite. At the right scene a girl is lying on her bed in her room, which three stairs are leading to it. On her right there is a table that has a flower pot with red flowers on it. Opposite the table stands the girl's white bed. Behind the girl's bed there is a grid window. Below the picture Song of Solomon 3:1 is quoted. The middle section is arched at the top, unlike the other scenes. It represents a girl descending her house stairs, wrapped in a gray robe. Down the stairs tow men are seated on the ground, wrapped in their robes, in front of a lantern. The alley houses are seen at the background. That very same background continues through the third scene. Solomon and Shulamite are depicted in the third section (see MA.1050.22). Above the left scene a girl is depicted identically, so to show two lovers running towards each other. The scene is all brown monochrome. Among the scene are standing brown columns. At the bottom of each there is a medallion. On the medallions is written, in block Hebrew letters from right to left: "1936"(or "you will want") "Z. Raban", "Jerusalem" and an unrecognized word. תרצה

20 Description

The picture illustrates Song of Solomon 8: 11-14. The picture is divided into three sections. At the central section black-bearded Solomon is kneeling on the ground, while leaning against a tree next to him, with his right hand. He is wearing a brown vest on his striped robe and a red head cover and looking down the slope to a black-haired Shulamite, seen from the back. Shulamite, looking at the man, is wearing a blue robe and a red head cover. Between them are two terraces and a blossoming tree. On the right section the sun is seen behind a snow-capped mountain. Down the mountain is a field with flowers and a deer. On the right corner of the right section a bird is spreading its wings. At the left section a deer and a palm tree are depicted on the background of a snow-capped mountain. In the foreground there is a flower field. The text is written below the whole picture in block, brown Hebrew letters, on a light brown background.

20 Description

The picture illustrates Song of Solomon 8: 8-10. Three men, the brothers, are sitting on a carpet, in the centre of the room, discussing. The left, black-bearded man is smoking a narghileh. He is leaning against the floor with his right hand and is wearing a green-yellow striped robe. The man beside him, seen from the back, is wearing a brown robe and a crimson kaffia. At his right another black-bearded man is sitting. He is wearing a brown vest and on his robe and a white kaffia. He seems to be speaking to the man beside him. He is trying to express something in his hands while speaking. A girl in a yellow dress and a red head cover is standing behind him. Her right hand is on her hip, while the left one is on her chest. On the wall behind her are weapons and tools, aside a trapeze window. On the right foreground are two cocks. The picture frame represents a brownstone relief. On both sides of the the painted scene stands a protruding pillar with a vault. Between the pillars, above the picture, lays a stone beam. The beam has arches upon it and symbols depicted between them. Right to left: tree, wheat, flower vase, pomegranate and palm tree. Below the right pillar a relief is painted. It represents a man ploughing the earth with bulls. Below the left pillar a relief of a shepherd with his flock is depicted in the same technique. The text is written below the painted scene, between the pillars as if inscribed in the stone. It is in Hebrew block, brown letters.

The picture illustrates Song of Solomon 5:7. The scene takes place at a street, during the night. Two guards are seen on the left with a young woman between them. The robed guard on her right is carrying a long torch. The woman is closer to him, trying to defend herself: her right hand is protecting her chest while the other one is around her head. The guard on her left, seen from the back, wearing a similar robe is holding a whip behind his back. He is about to whip her. On the background there is a stone paved street. The picture frame is painted as a gray stone wall with lion reliefs at the upper corners. At each side of the gate stands a column. The text is written in gray, block and big Hebrew letters, below the picture.

20 Description

The picture illustrates Song of Solomon 5:2-6. A naked young woman is sitting on a bed in a vaulted room and trying to cover her breasts with her right hand. Her black hair is scattered over her shoulders. She is looking towards the brown arched door, on the right, where a hand is trying to open the door from the outside. In front of the woman there is a jug on a tray. A table with a vase on it is standing at the left corner of the room. Behind the table there is a small window. Above the girl's bed there is a shelf with various pitchers on it. An oil lamp hangs on the ceiling. The picture frame is square and arched at the top. It seems like a stone relief. On the left corner a peacock is spreading its wings; on the right corner a dove is standing on a twig. Between them are floral decorative ornaments. At the sides of the picture are rectangles with "reliefs": a Menorah on the right side and twisted columns on the left. The text is written as well as a relief inscription in block, gray Hebrew letters.
