20 Description Illustrates the piyyut "El mitnase" אל מתנשא (Soaring God) for Shabbat Shekalim (Davidson, I, א, No. 3853, p. 178). A bird-headed man holding a balance is standing within a tower-shaped arch. The right plate of the balance, inscribed שקל, "shekel", is empty; the left, inscribed ישראל, "Israel", is weighed down by a pile of coins. Two fierce quadrupeds flank the scale, alluding to the satanic forces which try to tip the balance when the souls are being weighed. At the bases of the arched column are a lion on the right and a devilish quatruped on the left touching the initial word. The capital of the left arch is decorated with hybrid. In the tympanum of the arch the ligature El (God) is flanked by the sun in the shape of a rosette and a crescent moon, representing God's servants. Within the ligature of the "alef" is a Hebrew inscription with the name of the original patron שלי ברוך בר יצחק ז"ל, "Mine Barukh bar Isaac, may be rest in peace".
