20 Description The rectangualar kaporet is comprised of a band and five lobes on its lower border. The upper part is inscribed with two verses. In square filled letters from right to left it reads: דע לפני מי אתה עומד )אבות ג א(: שויתי ה לנגדי תמיד )תהלים טז ח( "Know before whom you are standing (Mishnah Avot 2:1); I have set the Lord always before me (Ps. 19:8)". The inscription is decorated with foliate motives, one in the center, seperates the verses and two others flank them on the sides. The band is decorated with three identical crowns each comprised of a wide base surmounted by three fleur-des-lys like arms. Above each crown there is a title inscribed in square filled letter. From right to left it reads: כתר תורה: כתר כהונה: כתר מלכות "Crown of the Law; Crown of Priesthood; Crown of Kingship" Foliate and floral motifs which emerge from each crown fill the space between them. A strip which seperates the band and the lobes is inscribed with a dedicatory inscription which reads: זה הכפרת נ)דבת( המרומ)ם( המנהיג מו)מורנו( מרדכי בהח)בן הרב ח( הענך כץ ואשתו הגבירה מ)רת( רוזא בה )בת הרב( יהושיע סגל שנת תקנ"ו לפ"ק "This Kaporet was donated by the exalted, the leader, our teacher Mordechai, Son of the Rabbi Ch. Hench Catz, and his wife the woman of substance Mrs. Rosa daughter of the Rabbi Joshua Segal, the year (5)556 (1796)". Each of the five lobes is decorated with one of the sanctuary implements. The implements are titled with an inscription in square filled letters. From right to left are: the Altar of the sacrifice (14023); the Shew bread table (14024); the Menorah (14025), the Laver and its stand (14026); the Ark of the covenant (14027). A band of fringes frames the Kaporet and three tassles hang from its lower border. Nine rings attached to the upper border are used for hanging it on the Torah ark.
