Who is Commemorated?
Holocaust victims from Volos
Description
The memorial monument occupies a rectangular plot, much like other grave markers on burial plots in the cemetery. Its basic form emulates that of other graves in the area. The plot is outlined with a low marble border wall, two steps above the cemetery path level, on which are set low white marble rectangular marble piers. A metal chain is attached from one pier to the next, enclosing the space. There is only on entry to the memorial, directly from the front. The memorial is a platform made in horizontal levels that get smaller as they ascend, creating steps. On the third level a horizontal box-like tomb is set about waist height. The top slab slopes forward slightly and is covered with a brief inscription at the top and then three columns of inscribed names of Holocaust victims. The inscribed slab abuts a rectangular block at the head. On this are set three connected smoothly finished marble cylinders of different heights. Atop each cylinder is set a two-piece carved red sandstone that resembles a flame. Thus, the cylinders should be read as burning candles at the head of the tomb.
