Description |
The white cotton Torah^Binder is a long narrow cloth composed of two pieces. The cloth bears an inscription and illustrations printed and painted, respectively, in a variety of colors. The inscription is painted in square stylized letters outlined in black which contain geometric, floral, and butterfly motifs. Each lamed ends in a flag. The inscription reads:
"יוסף בר דן ראזענטהאל נולד למז"ט )למזל טוב( ביום ג' טז חשון תרמב לפק."
"Joseph son of Dan Rosenthal, born with good luck Thursday the sixteenth of Heshvan, (5)642 (November 8,1881)."
Above the word "son of" is depicted a flower. Above the words "Thursday the sixteenth" is illustrated a rural scene: a house and land, in front of which is a woman with a stick and three turkeys. Above the date "5642" is depicted a hunting scene with a hunter and a dog pursuing a deer. The final word is followed by an illustration of an empty horse-drawn carriage. |
