The tesserae are made of limestone. They are laid in curved lines within the figure and in straight parallel lines in the background.
The giraffe's outline consists of one line of black tesserae. The giraffe, leaves and grapes are surrounded by one line of background tesserae.
The average number of tesserae per 10cm2 is (10x10) in the body and (9x9) in the background. Different hues of yellow are used, besides the various hues of black and white.
