The tesserae are made of limestone and marble. They are laid in curved lines within the figure and in straight parallel lines in the background.
The bird's outline consists of one line of black tesserae. The bird, grapes and leaves are surrounded by one line of background tesserae.
The average number of tesserae per 10cm2 is (9x10). A lower density can be found in the bird's body: (7x8). Different hues of black and white, including various shades of gray, are used.

A small part in the upper right extreme of the medallion is damaged. The bird's head is destroyed. Restoration can be seen in a small area of the medallion's upper extreme.
