20 Description

Fol. 43: The scribe and the worker are helping the fallen ass, which lies on its back, to stand up by pulling its legs. In contrast, the caption mentions the scribe as the only one who aids the ass. It reads: “Image of the worker lamenting his sorrow, while the scribe aids his she-ass” (צורת העוב(ר)ד הומה על יגונו, והסופר סועד את אתונו; Loewe 2004, II:343).

Originally, the two figures were differently drawn in brown ink by Scribe A, Abraham: the worker on the right, with a hood and a whip was standing upright with his tools hanging from his belt, while only the scribe is helping the ass, as described in the caption (see pencil drawing). These figures are partly hidden by the trees, and overdrawn by the artist.
