20 Description

The flat ceiling of the Kupa Synagogue is decorated with intricate geometrical ornamentation, which encloses images of holy places in Israel and also the musical instruments of Psalm 150:3-6.

The paintings of holy places are arranged two to a side, as follows: on the northern side, a representation of the Flood and a panorama of Jerusalem; on the southern, Tiberias and the Oak of Mamre; on the eastern, Jaffa Gate and the Western Wall; and on the western, panoramic views of Hebron and Haifa. Stylistically the pictures are bright and impressionistic. The scene of Noah's Ark on Mount Ararat and the view of Haifa supplement the much more traditional motifs of holy places in the Land of Israel.
