20 Description Fol. 1v: The opening page for the Mahzor begins with the initial word “King” (מלך) for the Yozer of the first day of the New Year prayers, executed by artist A. The initial word is written within a rectangular panel, set on the top of the page, filling the width of the text space (and slightly more). The initial word is written in large display letters in very dark brown ink and surrounded by wriggly work ending with leaves or animal heads. The letters are decorated with circles or squares enclosing stylized rosettes in spared ground technique, set on the junctions of each letter. The initial word is set on a yellowish-brown wash ground of the panel, inhabited by foliate scrolls, a hedgehog, a winged dragon with a tail extending into a thick foliate scroll, a dragon biting his own leg and three dogs. All these are executed in spared ground technique. A hand weighing the souls is depicted on the left side of the panel, alluding to the judgment which takes place on the New Year. The hand reaches out from the left side of the roof of the final letter "Khaf" (ך), and holds a scale composed of two small bowls, the right one inscribed “transgressions” (חובות) and the left inscribed “virtues” (זכויות). The left bowl is set slightly lower than the right one, indicating that the good deeds outweigh the evil ones. Both the hand and the bowls are painted with gold powder. The panel is surrounded by a border of foliate scrolls in spared ground technique set on the same yellowish-brown ground as the initial word.
