20 Description

Full-page text illustration, with three successive scenes of the Giving of the Law.

At the top right, Moses bearded and dressed in grey and green, stands bare-foot on Mount Sinai receiving the Tablets of the Law (with only one of its two parts seen) from the hand of God. The rectangular Tablets are inscribed with the first words of the Ten Commandments.

On the left, the bearded Aaron wearing shoes and dressed in green and red, descends from the mountain holding the second part of the Tablets. At the bottom left, Nadab stands at the foot of the mountain delivering the two joined Tablets to Abihu who is followed by a group of Israelites. Abihu and the Israelites stand in a row, enclosed under the fiery mountain (B.T. Sabbath 88a). All figures wear pointed Jewish hats.
