Art Alone
© Center for Jewish Art, Photographer: Unknown,
The initial word for the Book of Ruth, ויהי, is written in bold letters of burnished gold within a rectangular panel located in the upper part of the first two text columns. The blue ground of the panel is diapered with small circles and stars. Elaborate, multi-colored, foliate motifs form a border around the top and right sides of the panel while a simpler foliate motif descends from a stem on the left side. A medallion framed by foliage in the center of the panel's upper border, encloses a human figure set against a blue ground. His body is covered in fur, and he wears a pointed red hat and a short, red skirt. He shoots an arrow from a bow held in his left hand. Two confronting red and pink cocks are perched on the top half of the medallion. A winged, grotesque figure, emerges from the upper left corner of the foliate border.
